The local unit was against the greenback as it remained below the
psychological ZWL85 mark. The total bids allotted rose 3.6% to USD32.924m.
There are expectations the local unit will firm as inflows from tobacco
selling season gather momentum.

 

However on the alternative market the ZWL was stable in the week in the
ZWL120-ZWL122 band while most established retail outlets except big
supermarkets were still using a rate of ZWL110. Hardware shops are now
charging 118-120 while street money changers are at 130 for Ecocash or
ZIPIT.

 

If RBZ maintains the current foreign currency supply on the formal market
and Bureau de Change enhancements bear fruit, the premium of alternative
market may eventually come to the normal 15-20% band for emerging and
frontier markets allowing for easier planning and budgeting processes.
