Entrepreneurship Zone: 15 September 2025: From retrenchment to business empire: Hwange entrepreneur’s success story
<https://www.facebook.com/Hyundaizimbabwe/>
HWANGE-based businessman, Mr Rodrick Hwaire has built an impressive business empire in and around the mining town, starting from humble beginnings after receiving a voluntary retrenchment package in 2011.
Having moved to Hwange as a branch manager at a leading supermarket chain, his receipt of a voluntary retrenchment package was not just a once-off windfall for him; he viewed it as an opportunity to enter the tough field of entrepreneurship.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr Hwaire revealed that he viewed the package as an empowerment incentive, emphasizing that although he no longer received a monthly salary, he needed to make smart investment choices.
“When I got the retrenchment package of US$2000, many thought it was the end of the road for me, but I saw it as a new beginning. I took the entire amount and invested it in buying stock for a small grocery shop. The relationships and networks I built as a supermarket manager really helped me get started.”
His hard work and business savvy paid off quickly.
“In 2014, I found a bigger space and opened my second supermarket. It was a significant step because it showed me that growth was possible,” he said.
Two years later, he opened a third supermarket.
“By 2016, I had managed to build and open my third shop, and in 2018, I expanded even further by opening my first supermarket in rural Hwange,” Mr Hwaire explained.
He revealed that his ambitions didn’t stop at retail, noting how diversification became key in building his business empire.
“I managed to acquire a plot under the government’s A2 facility, which allowed me to diversify into cattle ranching. More recently, I started a piggery, which complements my other ventures.”
In 2021, Rodrick took a major leap in his business career by buying shares in a milling company, which has since grown to become a known brand in Hwange, Victoria Falls, Binga and Kamitivi.
“I bought shares in a milling company, and over time, I managed to acquire 100 percent ownership. This was a milestone because it connected all parts of my business, from retail to production.
“As you know, maize production is not high in Hwange and Matabeleland North as a whole, this business, initially, had its challenges but using my networks in the retail sector, I have managed to grow it and I am proud to say it is one of the most popular brands here in Hwange and surrounding areas,” he said.
Within his supermarkets, Mr Hwaire revealed that he has also ventured into complementary businesses.
“I have established a butchery and a bakery, which help me provide a full range of products to my customers,” he noted.
Despite his success, the businessman remains deeply committed to giving back to the community, revealing that he remained indebted to them as they took him in as a stranger coming to manage a supermarket and supported him in all the business ventures he has got into.
“I remember where I came from. I started here as just a manager, and now I want to help my community. I pay school fees for vulnerable children, give out food hampers to those in need, and assist families during bereavements.
“I am also supporting a local football team, Mpumalanga Chiefs, where I am catering for close to 75 percent of all their costs, this is just a token of my appreciation to this community; in fact, I will soon be increasing my philanthropic work here in Hwange and Matabeleland North as a whole,” he said.
The businessman said that while it was no easy fete, he was proud of the journey he had travelled and was now looking forward to further growing his business empire and also contributing towards the development of nation.
“My dream is to obviously have my supermarket chain and milling brand spreading right through the province and the region. My advice to anyone wanting to enter entrepreneurship is that success is not just about what you achieve, but also about how you uplift those around you,” he said.-Hearldonline
