'Mining regulations still restrictive'

Zimbabwe's domestic mining regulatory environment remains one of the most
restrictive in the region and needs to change to attract investment, a
leading information group Fitch Solutions says in its latest report. Fitch
Solutions is part of the Fitch Group, a global leader in financial
information services with operations in more than 30 countries. In a recent
analysis of the mining regulatory framework, Fitch Solutions said issues
around high local ownership requirements, royalty rates and government
intervention were restrictive. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

was restricting the importation of certain products that were deemed as
readily available locally. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

Foreign medical trips bleeding Zim: ED

FOREIGN trips to seek specialised medical attention by Zimbabweans are
bleeding the country of the much-needed foreign currency, President Emmerson
Mnangagwa has said. Writing in his weekly column in the State-controlled
Sunday Mail newspaper, Mnangagwa, who along with leading figures in his
government, have all sought medical treatment outside the country, said the
country needed to develop its capacity going forward. "Many Zimbabweans are
turning to foreign countries for specialised healthcare. This is very
expensive for our nation," Mnangagwa said. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read

Zim fine-tunes GCF structures

Zimbabwe has begun the search for a national consultant to spearhead the
mobilisation of financial resources for domestic climate change projects
with the Green Climate Fund, a special UN facility for tackling climate
challenges throughout the world. The country has an $80 million climate
adaptation and mitigation project waiting in the wings for funding.
Established under the UN climate talks, the South Korea-based fund, which
has so far raised $10,3 billion against the $100 billion needed each year by
developing countries in Africa and elsewhere, aims to help poor nations cope
with climate change. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

Lowveld cotton farmers in early planting

SOME cotton farmers in the Lowveld have started planting - several weeks
earlier than is usual - as early tillage of their fields has afforded them a
quick start to fieldwork. In the Lowveld region - one of Zimbabwe's largest
cotton producing areas - the farmers, who usually plant in December and in
some instances in January, are expected to take advantage of the early
rains, thereby raising prospects for better yields. The farmers are
beneficiaries of the Government's contract cotton farming scheme meant to
stimulate cotton production by providing inputs to mostly peasant farmers.

'Free float exchange system catastrophic'

ZIMBABWE risks plunging into rampaging price inflation if it liberalises
foreign exchange controls, according to the proponents of a managed exchange
rate system. But critics of the system argue that fixing the exchange rate
is only delaying inevitable price spiral - inflation. Zimbabwe's annualised
inflation raced to 5,39 percent in September 2018 from 4,83 percent a month
earlier. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has maintained a fixed exchange rate
system of the bond note and US dollar, insisting they rank at par (1 to 1)
to entrench the multi-currency system and preserve price stability.

NRZ urged to introduce commuter trains

Stakeholders have urged the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) to introduce
commuter trains in a bid to regain the glory in the transport sector. This
comes at a time when people are being robbed of their hard earned money by
unscrupulous commuter omnibus operators who have hiked fares and are taking
advantage of the prevailing economic situation. During peak hour, some
commuter omnibuses further hike their fares to as far as $1.50 to
Chitungwiza and a $1 in most suburbs. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

Give artisanal miners more time: Minister

GOVERNMENT says small-scale miners should be given time to acquire equipment
and work the land before considering forfeiting their claims over
non-payment of rentals. According to the Mines and Minerals Act, claims that
are not up to date on rent payments after two years are forfeited as they
are deemed to be held for speculative purposes. Speaking at a Zimbabwe
Miners' Federation (ZMF) meeting with small-scale miners last week, Minister
of State for Provincial Affairs Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba said everyone should be
given a chance to prove that they can contribute meaningfully to production.

Maize seed prices unjustified - Minister

Government yesterday said there is no reason for maize seed producers to
hike prices, and it will take measures to protect farmers against the
unwarranted behaviour by the manufacturers. Industry and Commerce Minister
Mangaliso Ndlovu said there was no justification for seed producers to hike
prices. Seed producers are selling a 10kg bag of maize seed at slightly
above $100, up from $25 last farming season, while a 25kg bag is being sold
at about $250 from $70 last season. The increases are a sign that maize seed
producers have joined the bandwagon of unilateral price hikers.

Lifting Import Restrictions Does Not Address Forex Challenges Faced By Local
Industries - CZI

The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) has said that the
government's decision to indefinitely remove all import restrictions is not
well thought out because it does not address the challenges faced by local
industries. CZI president Sifelani Jabangwe said the issue of inadequate
foreign currency will still need to be addressed and will actually become
worse. Said Jabangwe. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >
