Econet wins $100m tax evasion case

THE Supreme Court yesterday dismissed claims by the Zimbabwe Revenue
Authority (Zimra) that it was owed $100 million by Econet Wireless through
tax evasions. The curtain closed on a near 10-year battle between Zimra and
Econet, wherein the tax authority claimed that the latter owed millions of
dollars in unpaid taxes. A panel of judges, led by Chief Justice Luke
Malaba, ruled in favour of Econet Wireless whose lawyer Tawanda Nyambirai
yesterday said it was a victory for victims of cyber-bullying.

New number plates requirements introduced

MOTORISTS will no longer be required to change vehicle registration plates
along with the change of ownership as the Government seeks to reduce
expenditure in the production of the plates, a senior official said
yesterday. Acquiring new vehicle registration plates has been a challenge
for motorists lately with the Central Vehicle Registry facing a shortage of
the plates, which are imported from Germany. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read

Harare Racks In $1,5 Million From Vendors

Harare City Council collected $1,5 million from vendors in 2018. The figure
was, however, lower than the Council's projected income. This was revealed
during a full council meeting held recently. Part of minutes from the full
Council meeting read as follows: Revenue collection had declined by 23,39%
during the year under review compared to the previous year. The decline in
revenue collection was attributed to the following challenges: inadequate
funding for informal sector projects, political interference in the
allocation of market stalls to vendors and revenue collection and economic
hardship, resulting in traders failing to pay market fees to Council.

Zupco buses fast disappearing in many suburb

Fuel queues have resurfaced in Harare with commuter operators taking
advantage of the situation to hike fares, while Zupco buses are fast
disappearing in many suburbs of Harare, leaving thousands of commuters
stranded. Most filling stations in Harare were closed and displayed "no
diesel" signs, while long and winding queues formed at the few with the
commodity. A survey conducted by NewsDay yesterday showed that commuters to
suburbs such as Epworth, Waterfalls, Kambuzuma and Kuwadzana were stranded
because there were few kombis to ferry them. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read

Multichoice Finally Listed On The JSE

A few months ago Naspers announced that they would be listing Multichoice
separately on the JSE. For many of us, this seemed like a sign of doom and
gloom as our gut feeling was that this move was meant to ditch Multichoice
and their satellite TV business model which looks to be on the verge of
being made extinct by Video on Demand services like Netflix. Anyway, that's
a future that is yet to be played out but Multichoice has indeed been listed
on the JSE.

Western Union Explains US Dollar Shortage

Managing director of Western Union Money Transfer Manager Mr Tendai Bindura
explained the source of shortages for United States dollars. Western Union
has been unable to disburse foreign currency with some agents closing due to
forex shortages. Bindura said most banks in Zimbabwe are facing challenges
of importing hard cash, thereby delaying remittances services, which depend
on availability of foreign currency. In an interview with The Herald's
sister paper Business Weekly recently, Mr Bindura said problems started when
a South African bank, used by local money transfer agencies, changed its
correspondent banking partner to Deustche bank of Germany. Said Bindura:

RBZ Denies Fuel Price Increase Reports

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) yesterday dismissed reports circulating
on social media that fuel prices will increase. The reports claimed that
fuel industry stakeholders and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) met and
agreed to increase the price of petrol to $5,50 from $3,30 and of diesel to
$5,15 from $3,10. In a statement on Twitter, RBZ said the reports are fake.
Said RBZ: The article circulating on social media on the fuel price hikes of
$5.50 and $5.15 for petrol and diesel respectively, is fake news. For
starters the alleged meeting at the RBZ with fuel suppliers never took
place. The social media article is aimed at causing panic buying of fuel and
should be treated with the contempt it deserves. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/>

Government seeks $600million facility for industry

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce is negotiating a US$600 million
facility with Botswana, for the local manufacturing sector, whose capacity
utilisation remains below 50 percent owing to a range of factors including
the US-imposed economic embargoes and antiquated production equipment. The
manufacturing sector was also being weighed down by the strong US dollar,
which was being used as a transaction currency, making locally produced
goods uncompetitive on the exports markets. Market watchers and some
industrialists say using the US dollar as a transaction currency, is not
ideal for an economy seeking to boost production, and critically, exports.
