Zimbabwe tobacco output set to dip to 240 million kg after drought
(Reuters) - Zimbabwean farmers are expected to sell up to 240 million kg of
tobacco this year, a 5 percent dip from 2018 due to drought, an industry
official said on Wednesday at the start of the selling season that could
help ease a severe dollar shortage. The opening of tobacco auctions
traditionally leads to improved foreign exchange inflows in the southern
African nation as buyers bring in dollars from offshore banks to purchase
the crop. Tobacco, which is grown by more than 170,000 mostly small-scale
farmers, is Zimbabwe's second-biggest earner of foreign exchange after
mining and last year brought in $892 million. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read

Government mulls small-scale miners production in precious stones
GOVERNMENT is considering allowing small-scale miners to diversify
operations by participating in the production of semi-precious stones. Mines
and Mining Development Deputy Minister, Engineer Polite Kambamura said this
during a small-scale miners' forum held in Bulawayo yesterday. "Our
artisanal small-scale mining sector will soon diversify to include mining of
semi-precious stones, manganese and other minerals apart from gold and
chrome they have been mining. You agree with me that focus has been made on
gold and little attention to other minerals," he said.

Businesses must stop charging exorbitant prices
Government was last October forced to suspend Statutory Instrument 122 of
2017 (formerly S164 of 2016) to allow supermarkets and other businesses to
restock. Companies and individuals with offshore and free funds were allowed
to import specified basic commodities that were in short supply due to
speculative behaviour by local retailers and panic buying by consumers. The
Government decision to lift the imports ban forced some manufacturers who
had been stockpiling commodities for speculative purposes to off-load the
products. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >
