'Adopt measures to mitigate Covid-19 impact'
African countries, Zimbabwe included, will need to consider adopting various
possible economic interventions to minimise the negative impact of Covid-19
and stimulate domestic growth post the global pandemic, the African Union
(AU) has said. Covid-19, believed to have first broke out in the Chinese
city of Wuhan before spreading globally, killing tens of thousands and
infecting hundreds of thousands others, has been declared a global health
emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO). <http://www.bulls.co.zw/>

Safety nets critical for smallholder farmers
Smallholder farmers and traders will bear the brunt of the coronavirus more
due to lack of safety nets to cushion them during such disasters, industry
experts have said. Following the outbreak of the pandemic, many economies
have been affected with businesses scaling down operations with a lockdown
implemented across countries. Small holder farmers have, however, been
argued to be at more risk due to the nature of their businesses - small and
informal, despite their immense contribution to food security at both
household and national level. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >
Govt to increase renewable energy output
Zimbabwe is targeting to have renewable energy (RE) output accounting for
16, 5 percent of the country's total electricity demand by 2025, rising to
26,5 percent by 2030. The figures are contained in the National Renewable
Energy Policy (2019). The country requires 1 800 megawatts (MW) at peak
periods of demand, but is currently able to generate way under 1 000MW due
to constrained production capacity at two of the country's largest power
plants. Addition of renewable energy sources to the power mix is expected to
contribute to improvement in power supplies in the medium-to-long term.

Corporates not paying dues
Concerns that the coronavirus lockdown has opened the door for large
corporates to avoid paying smaller suppliers for their services has prompted
the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry to launch a survey among its
members probing allegations of non-payment. The Chamber says it is
conducting the survey following a spike in complaints of non-payment from
small and medium enterprises (SMEs), who say that they are struggling to
make ends meet as a result of not being paid by their corporate clients.
They fear that a lack of cash flow could spark a wave of closures and job
losses, exacerbating the impact of the coronavirus where they are already
hard hit. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >
Headache for Zim, SA parlours
FUNERAL parlours in South Africa are engaging authorities to facilitate the
repatriation of deceased Zimbabweans through Beitbridge Border Post for
burial home. The parlours are concerned with the manner in which the process
is being handled with rules and regulations changing frequently on either
sides of the border. Under normal circumstances, at least 60 bodies are
brought into the country through Beitbridge Border Post weekly. As a result
of the state of affairs, six bodies were returned to Johannesburg last
Wednesday after the parlours reportedly failed to meet some of the
regulations being rolled out under lockdown guidelines in both Zimbabwe and
South Africa. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

Farmers warned against counterfeit hessian packs
tobacco wrapping paper supplier, Propak, has warned farmers against buying
hessian wrapping packs from unauthorised dealers to protect their tobacco
quality. This comes after counterfeit wrapping packs suspected to have been
smuggled from Zambia flooded the market with farmers unknowingly purchasing
them for use. Speaking to The Herald recently, Propak's account
administrator, Felistus Hove, urged farmers to comply with Tobacco Industry
and Marketing Board (TIMB) requirements so that their crop is not rejected
at the floors. "The hessian (tobacco wrapping paper) that has since flooded
the market from countries like Zambia is not recommended by TIMB," she said.
