Enclosing cattle on crop fields helps restore soil fertility

In Chinyika village, Gutu district, smallholder farmers appear to have found
a novel strategy to restore soils, damaged from decades of chemical use and
mechanical ploughing: they are driving cattle onto their crop fields and
enclosing them there for a period of time, at least seven days. The idea is
that the cattle use their hooves to loosen hard capped soils, while dropping
their dung and urine, which in turn improves soil fertility including water
retention, according to Dr Paul Muchineripi, a conservation expert who is
working with the community on the issue. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more

Covid-19 travel restrictions devastate Africa's tourism

Global restrictions on travel have dealt a devastating blow to African
nations, including Zimbabwe, who depend on tourists and their hard currency
to support an industry that employs millions of people on the continent.
National carriers in Mauritius, Kenya, and Namibia run into more financial
trouble as flights were grounded. In South Africa, listed hotel group, Sun
International, announced two of its casinos will not reopen after the
country's coronavirus lockdown ends. The Kenyan government expects losses of
as much as $511 million in hotel-room revenue if the pandemic persists.

Zimbabwe's New Currency Auction Unfairly Favors Big Business

HARARE, ZIMBABWE - Businessman Nyasha Mubonesi used to seethe about
Zimbabwe's parallel market for foreign currency. Sometimes, he couldn't get
as much money as he needed. Other times, exchange rates skyrocketed and
nosedived - in a single day. Then the government unveiled a Foreign Exchange
Auction Trading System in late June, and Mubonesi thought his currency woes
were behind him. Instead, he learned that it was only for businesses that
can bid at least $50,000 at auction. Mubonesi, whose company sells laptops,
printers, cartridges and other communications equipment, makes about 900,000
Zimbabwean dollars (ZWL) ($12,476) per month. "It's nowhere near the minimum
required," he says. "It's not everyone in business who can use this
facility." The auction is Zimbabwe's latest attempt to stem a yearslong
foreign currency crisis, which has deepened an overall sense of economic
fear and instability. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

Funding success for Zimbabwe's fish farmers

Fish farming is getting increasingly widespread in Zimbabwe, thanks to a
joint drive to promote it. However, the building of ponds and dams and
distribution of fingerlings to farmers in various parts of the country has
not been complemented by sufficient market-oriented education and skills
training. As a result, said Waddilove Sansole, team leader of European Union
(EU)-funded Zimbabwe Agriculture Knowledge and Innovation Services (ZAKIS),
many operations are struggling to grow beyond subsistence production and
access reliable markets that pay competitively. "Production knowledge is
there on many operations but what farmers need now is training for them to
be able to produce what the market is looking for," he told The Fish Site.

Brisk business for exemption letter entrepreneurs

FAKE exemption letters for different reputable companies are being accessed
from various printing service providers in Mutare for as low as $20, thereby
resulting in many people clandestinely finding their way into the city
centre, The Manica Post has established. Investigations by this newspaper
revealed that printing service providers have templates that they use to
fill in details of their clients after photocopying the original copies from
the respective companies. Under the ongoing lockdown, only people who work
for organisations who offer essential goods and services are exempted from
the travel restrictions. Such holders of exemption letters must produce the
documents when asked to do so by law enforcement agents at various
checkpoints dotted across the country. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >
