Coronavirus  updates: With 20,333 fresh Covid-19 cases, India's caseload now stands at 10,208,725. The country's death toll has mounted to 147,940. With 1,919,550 cases, Maharashtra has the highest number of coronavirus cases, followed by Karnataka 915,345, Andhra Pradesh 881,000, Tamil Nadu 814,000, and Kerala 735,611.

The Covid-19 active caseload in the country has dipped to 278,000. However, the pandemic continues to take a toll on activities. The Madhya Pradesh Assembly session which was scheduled to begin today had to be postponed after protem speaker disclosed that 61 employees and officials of the Assembly secretariat and five MLAs had tested coronavirus-positive.
 

India is set to hold a two-day dry run from today for its proposed ambitious vaccination drive, likely to be kicked off in January, in four states Punjab, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat..

 

World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 81,126,414. While 57,280,811 have recovered, 1,771,407 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 19,567,784 cases, and 341,138 have died from the disease there. It is followed by India, which has 10,208,725 cases, Brazil (7,484,285), Russia (3,050,248), France (2,559,686).

 


Covid-19 vaccination dry run begins in two Gujarat districts


A two-day dry run to check the preparedness of health authorities for a future nationwide COVID-19 vaccination programme began on Monday in Rajkot and Gandhinagar districts of Gujarat. The state is one of the four states chosen by the Centre to conduct the mock COVID-19 vaccination drive.

 

"In Gujarat, the dry run is being carried out in Rajkot district, Rajkot city, Gandhinagar district and Gandhinagar city," State Immunisation Office Dr Nayan Jani told reporters. "The actual field visits will begin on Tuesday," Jani said, adding that actual (potential) vaccine shots will not be administered on people during the dry run.

 

He said local health officials of these districts and cities will engage in administrative work on the first day of the drive. Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) has identified 125 beneficiaries in the city who will be covered during the mock drill on Tuesday, said GMC Health Officer Dr Kalpesh Goswami.

 


11 UK returnees found Covid-19 infected in Mumbai since Nov 25


A total of 11 out of about 2,200 passengers who returned to Mumbai from the United Kingdom since November 25 have been found coronavirus positive, the civic body officials said on Monday. Of these 11 passengers, five passengers had arrived last week, while the six others had returned before December 22, Dr Managala Gomare, executive health officer, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), told PTI.

 

Another official said samples of these 11 passengers have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for genome sequencing to find if they are infected with a new strain of the coronavirus.

 

"Currently, 187 of the 590 passengers who returned from the UK last week are placed under institutional quarantine at various hotels," Dr Gomare said.

 

She said the state government had handed over to the civic body two lists of more than 2,000 passengers, who arrived from England between November 25 and December 22. She said all of them are not yet contacted.

 

 

China jails citizen journalist Zhan for 4 years over Wuhan Covid reports

Citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, who was detained in May for her live stream reporting from Wuhan over COVID-19, has been sentenced to four years of imprisonment on Monday, Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) reported.

 

She has been convicted of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" for her reporting in the chaotic initial stages of the outbreak. 

 

 

Covid-19 positive Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Rawat shifted to hospital

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, who had tested positive for COVID-19 recently, was shifted to the Government Doon Medical College here after developing fever, an official said on Monday.

 

As he had developed mild fever, he was taken for a check-up on Sunday evening to the GDMC where doctors decided to admit him, the official at the Chief Minister's Office said.

 

 

Africa's confirmed Covid-19 cases surpass 2.64 million: Health authorities

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the African continent has increased to 2,644,112, according to health authorities.

 

In its latest update, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said that the death toll stood at 62,366 while a total of 2,212,975 people infected with the virus have recovered across the continent as of Sunday afternoon, reports Xinhua news agency.

 

The most affected African countries in terms of the number of positive cases include South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia, figures from the Africa CDC showed.

Israel imposes third nationwide lockdown amid Covid vaccination drive

Israel has entered the third nationwide lockdown amid a vaccination drive aimed at curbing the raging coronavirus pandemic.

 

The restrictions, which came into force on Sunday, will last for at least two weeks, pending a final decision by the coronavirus cabinet, reports Xinhua news agency.

 

Under the new measures, from 5 p.m. every evening, people are required to stay within 1,000 metres of their homes, except for commuting to workplaces that have been defined as "essential," seeking medical care, attending legal proceedings, and exercising. 

 

 

Brazil Vice President tests positive for coronavirus

Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Sunday, his office said in a statement.

 

The result was confirmed on Sunday. Mourao will remain in isolation at his official vice-presidential residence, said the statement, Xinhua reported.

 

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was infected in July and has recovered.

United States facing four historic crises at once, says Joe Biden


US President-elect Joe Biden on Sunday said that his country is facing "four historic crises at once", adding that his team is work working hard to tackle the time-bound challenges.

 

"From COVID-19 and the economy to climate change and racial justice -- our nation is facing four historic crises at once. And come January, there will be no time to waste. That's why my team and I are hard at work preparing to take action on day one," Biden tweeted. 

 

 

Donald Trump signs $900 billion Covid-19 relief, government-funding measure

US President Donald Trump has signed a $900 billion pandemic relief package that will deliver long-sought cash to businesses and individuals.

 

It also averts a government shutdown.

 

Trump announced the signing in a statement on Sunday night.

 

The massive bill includes USD 1.4 trillion to fund government agencies through September and contains other end-of-session priorities such as money for cash-starved transit systems and an increase in food stamp benefits.

 

 

South Korea reports its first cases of new coronavirus variant

South Korea has confirmed the first three cases of the new coronavirus strain in the country, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

 

The three people arrived from the United Kingdom on December 22, KDCA said.

 

"They arrived in the country as a family living in London and tests revealed the presence of the virus; they are now in quarantine," KDCA said.

Donald Trump has signed the Covid-19 relief and spending bill after days of delays, preventing a mid-pandemic government shutdown.

 

The announcement on Sunday night after Republicans urged him to act following his refusal to sign the bill, a decision that meant millions of Americans lost unemployment aid.

 

Trump blindsided members of both parties and upended months of negotiations when he demanded last week that the package – already passed by the House and Senate by large margins and believed to have Trump’s support – be revised to include larger relief checks and scaled-back spending.

 

 

Global Covid-19 cases surpass 80.2 million: Johns Hopkins University

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 80.7 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.76 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

 

In its latest update on Monday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 80,751,164 and 1,764,215, respectively. 

 

 

US sees more Covid-19 deaths in December than before

The United States has witnessed more Covid-19 deaths in December than in any other month since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to a latest report of The Covid Tracking Project.

 

"December is already the deadliest month since the beginning of the pandemic in the United States," said a weekly report of the tracking project, Xinhua news agency reported.

 

The report came as the country continues to see surges in cases, deaths and hospitalizations nationwide.

 

Total Covid-19 deaths in December stood at 63,526 as of Saturday, with a seven-day average of 2,219 daily deaths, according to the tracking project. Currently, there are more than 117,300 people hospitalized with Covid-19.
