Qatar Airways to buy Rwandair stake to gain African foothold

Qatar Airways plans to purchase a 49% stake in Rwanda's national carrier,
stepping up its presence in the market weeks after taking a majority holding
in the African country's new airport. The Gulf airline is investing in
Rwandair after identifying Africa as a market with significant potential,
Akbar Al Baker, its chief executive officer, said in a briefing at the CAPA
Qatar Aviation conference on Wednesday. The holding being negotiated will be
its first in the continent after a string of deals elsewhere.

Airzim plane gets nod to fly   

Air Zimbabwe (Airzim)'s 50-seater Embraer ER145 is set to take to the skies
within three months after the national airline received the
Know-Your-Customer (KYC) certification. In aviation circles, the KYC is a
rigorous process that seeks to demonstrate an airline's capability in
maintaining and operating the aircraft. It also covers traceability of the
aircraft and the standing of the operator, as well as showing the competence

Govt to repossess underutilised farms   

Government will in the near future consider repossessing underutilised farm
land and allocate it to other potential beneficiaries, Lands, Agriculture,
Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri has said. Minister
Shiri indicated that Government had operationalised a wide range of schemes
that farmers could choose from to make sure that the redistributed arable
land is productively put to use for the country's greater economic benefit.

Zimra recovers $80 million   

National revenue collector, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra),
intensified war against graft and other forms of crime resulting in the
recovery of $80 million during the fourth quarter to December 31, 2019, a
senior official has revealed. This contributed significantly to the
authority's revenue collected for the quarter that stood at 651 percent

SMM to sell properties, land to clear debt   

Fallen asbestos producing  giant, Shabanie Mashava Mines Holdings (SMM
Holdings), plans to  dispose land and properties it owns to help pay off
debts and  recapitalise to resume operations. The company was mothballed
nearly 15 years ago and placed under the management of an administrator,
choked by massive debts mainly to  the government. Restarting operations has
remained a dream due to slow and complicated procedures, legal and

UNDP support for miners   

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is conducting a needs
assessment for the small scale mining sector in conjunction with the
Ministry of Mines and Mining Development that will culminate in the
development agency providing funding to address challenges bedevilling the
sector. This was revealed by Mines and Mining Development Permanent
Secretary Mr Onismo Mazai-Moyo on the back of the agency having signed a
cooperating agreement with the ministry last year.

CFI to capitalise Crest Poultry Group   

CFI Holdings Limited, has revealed its intentions to fully capitalise its
subsidiary - Crest Poultry Group (CPG) - after it was placed under judicial
management in 2016. In its full year results ending 30 September 2019, CFI
noted that it had managed to raise $42,5 million to fund the payment of
Crest Poultry Group's creditors adding there was enough working capital
required to re-launch the businesses.The business is now under its control.

Polyfoil Zim to invest US$1m in equipment   

LEADING packaging material manufacturer and supplier, Polyfoil Zimbabwe
plans to invest US$1 million in plant and equipment at its factory in
Bulawayo over the next three years to improve on operational
competitiveness. The Bulawayo-headquartered company which emerged from the
woods in 2018 having been placed under judicial management in 2013 is
operating at 48 percent capacity due to depressed demand. In an interview
after a tour of the firm by Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Raj Modi
who was accompanied by Bulawayo Provincial Minister Judith Ncube yesterday,
Polyfoil Zimbabwe managing director, Mr Mudiwa Mhazo said: "Our wish-list
(for retooling) goes up to US$1 million over the next three years as there
are a number of machinery that we want and we would want to do it

'Bulawayo companies to blame for tender losses'   

BULAWAYO City Council has said some companies based in the city fail to meet
tender requirements but end up crying foul after losing to outsiders. Local
businesses have in the past complained that the local authority was
sidelining them in the awarding of tenders. However, council officials have
blamed local companies for failing to do proper paperwork resulting in them

Information Minister Commissions HD Studio For Independent Producers

Information and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa has
commissioned a studio at the ZBC Pockets Hill for independent producers. ZBC
News reports that Mutsvangwa was full of praise for the state-run
broadcaster for ensuring that its competitors have access to facilities that
will enable them to play a diverse and critical role in the broadcasting
industry. The publication further reports that the studio has modern
technology such as lighting systems that allow up to two production sets
with four cameras, good editing suites, good acoustics and multiple video
recorders which can be configured to operate in ultra-high definition.
