Econet suffers volume decline   

Mobile network operator, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, had a nightmarish
performance for the third quarter to October 2019 as affordability issues
saw subscribers scale down on usage.Traffic volumes declined across the
board from the previous quarter with voice traffic down 8 percent, data
traffic 30 percent and SMS traffic 35 percent. In a quarterly update
released recently, the MNO said the decline in traffic volumes followed "the
headline tariff adjustments in August 2019 and October 2019".

Zesa to recruit new engineers, managers   

ZESA is looking at recruiting new managers to spearhead the re-bundling of
its five companies, a move that should see a sharp reduction in managerial
staff once duplicated positions are eliminated. Chairman Dr Sydney Gata said
Zesa was short of senior engineers and managers and did not have a pool for
promotion from within. He said Zesa had lost more than 400 engineers to
Eskom of South Africa, 72 to Britain and 65 to Australia.

Govt on course to rein in inflation   

The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube
says Government has moved milestones with regard to the currency reform
agenda as well as paving way for the much needed private sector-led economy.
Responding to questions during an interview with Bloomberg on the sidelines
of the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Minister Ncube indicated that
the Government has made great strides in trying to arrest challenges
emanating from rising levels of inflation as well as in creating an
environment conducive for Foreign Direct Investment.

Council workers demand 6-fold salary increment   

Stung by the alleged quadrupling of salaries for top council management,
ordinary Harare City Council workers are now demanding a six-fold rise in
their earnings to beat inflation. The least-paid council worker gets $1 000
while the bosses are believed to be pocketing an average of $25 000

'Gold output decline won't worsen forex crisis'   

The decline in gold output last year will have minimal effect on the foreign
currency situation in the country, including availability of hard currency
on the interbank market because the largest fall was among small miners
while better prices in 2019 may off set the volumes drop. Latest statistics
show that gold deliveries to the country's sole authorised buyer, Fidelity
Printers and Refiners, fell 16,8 percent in 2019 from 33,2 tonnes to 27

'Agric policies must attract investment'   

ZIMBABWE needs to promulgate policies that attract investments in
agriculture in light of the changes that have been created by the agrarian
reforms, which have altered dynamics in the sector. Lands, Agriculture,
Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri said this while
officially opening his Ministry's 2020 Strategic Planning Workshop at a

Telecel Zim adopts strategic plan   

MOBILE operator Telecel Zimbabwe says it has formulated and adopted a
five-year strategic plan to address recapitalisation issues. In a statement,
the mobile operator said its board and shareholders were aware of the
challenges facing the company, with plans ahead to tackle the issues
associated with recapitalisation. "The Telecel board and shareholders are
aware of the ongoing challenges. Plans are underway to address the issue of
recapitalisation and in this regard, a five-year strategic plan has already

To Bite

Bhadela Wholesalers are reportedly shutting down operations this Friday due
to the deteriorating economy. The development was revealed by William Gerald
Mutumanje also known as Acie Lumumba, a former member of the ruling ZANU PF
who posted on Twitter saying:End of an era. Bhadella Wholesalers are closing
down this Friday January 24,. Sadly they are forced to close down with
immediate effect due to the economic situation. They have been in operation

Public hospitals to go digital   

Zimbabwe's public health institutions will have all patients' records
available in digital form at any health facility after the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) partnered Estonia in a project whose pilot phase will be
launched within six months. The process will start as soon as the UAE and
Estonian experts complete a needs assessment mission, which began yesterday

National Foods positive about demand for maize products   

Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed food manufacturer and marketer, National
Foods, experts demand for maize products to be firm and has put in place a
substantial import programme of raw maize to meet demand, chief executive
officer Michael Lashbrook told our sister publication Business Weekly.
National Foods is one of the leading maize milling companies in the country
and for its 12 months to June 2019, recorded a 60 percent volume growth for

Sawanga Mall opens next month   

Property firm, Zimre Property Investments Limited's state-of-the-art
shopping mall - Sawanga Mall in Victoria Falls -will be commissioned next
month, a senior official has said. ZPI managing director Edson Muvingi,
indicated by telephone that the mall, which was initially scheduled for
official opening last year, would be commissioned in the first quarter of
this year. "We will commission in February," he said.
