'Increase collaboration to substitute imports'

INDUSTRY and Commerce Minister, Dr Sekai Nzenza, says increased
collaboration between productive sectors is critical for the country to
boost domestic production and effectively substitute unnecessary yet costly
imports. As a result of subdued domestic production, which has seen
manufacturing capacity utilisation drop to 36,4 percent in 2019 from 48,2
percent in 2018, according to the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries
(CZI), Zimbabwe is heavily reliant on imports for both raw materials and
essential consumer goods. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

Zimbabwe has exported close to 50 000 tonnes of tobacco to different parts
of the world since the beginning of the year, latest data from the Tobacco
Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) shows. Although TIMB did not indicate
the value of the golden leaf so far exported, the bulk of the flue-cured
tobacco has been absorbed by markets in the Far East, where 18 673 tonnes
were sold followed by the European Union with 11 205 tonnes. In its report
for the 11th week ending March 13, 2020, the marketing board as at March 12,
is on third position in terms of tobacco exports, the Middle East with 8 981
tonnes followed by markets in Africa that have bought 6 967 tonnes from
Zimbabwe. During the period under review, Europe and the Americas had bought

PPC volumes down 15 percent

Cement maker, PPC Zimbabwe volumes for the 11 months to February 2020,
weakened by 15 percent to 20 percent compared to same period last year,
reflective of the general economic environment in the country. However, PPC
Zimbabwe remained self-sufficient and recorded improvements in earnings
before interests, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margins of 35
percent and 38 percent despite several challenges that weighed on business.
The operating environment has been challenging for businesses as
inflationary pressures resulted in increased cost of inputs, while causing a
decline in consumer spending. Limited access to foreign currency has also
been one of the major challenges affecting the economy.

produced a record 16 876 ounces in the fourth quarter ended December 31,
2019 representing a 13 percent increase from 14 952 ounces in the
comparative period backed by improved efficiencies. In a trading update,
chief executive officer Steve Curtis said on-mine costs per ounce declined
to $651 in 2019 from $690 in 2018 owing to lower electricity costs in the
first quarter and lower on-mine administration costs due to the devaluation
of the local currency. Despite continued substantial investment in the
Central Shaft, the company said cash flows remain strong. Cash flows from

FPR resumes gold incentives payment

Fidelity Printers and Refineries (FPR) has resumed payment of incentives for
gold deliveries as the country's single legal gold buyer seeks to ward off
competition from the alternative market. Gold miners had last received an
incentive for their produce early last year under the export incentive
scheme but this was discontinued. Zimbabwe is losing tens of tonnes of the
yellow metal to smuggling as producers opt for the all US dollar paying
parallel market as opposed to the formal market, which settles part of the
delivery in local currency using the interbank exchange rate.

New street cameras for Harare CBD

Harare City Council has started installing new surveillance cameras at
traffic lights in the city centre to rein in traffic offenders and thus
reduce congestion, although the cameras installed almost six years ago at
two intersections have failed to make an impact. The cameras are designed to
"capture" motorists who impede the smooth flow of traffic. It is envisaged
that the cameras will assist police in identifying criminals in the city
centre. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >

No more land for housing cooperatives, says council

HARARE City Council has stopped allocating residential land to cooperative
to curb the swindling of residents by land barons running cooperatives and
instead has invited residents on the waiting list to approach the council
directly. This comes after residents have lost their hard-earned money to
land barons who were selling a single residential stand to multiple home
seekers. Council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme on Tuesday warned residents
against paying for residential stands to land barons and apply to the local
authority. <http://www.bulls.co.zw/> Read more >
