Regeneron's antibody cocktail may offer protection against Covid-19: Study

The experimental antibody cocktail which US President Donald Trump received when he tested positive for Covid-19 offers benefits against the novel coronavirus infection, according to a new study in animal models which provides more evidence of the clinical potential of the therapeutic.

While earlier studies had shown that the cocktail of two antibodies targeting the coronavirus spike protein could be used to neutralise the pathogen, scientists from the American biotechnology company Regeneron noted that further research in multiple animal models is needed to test the effectiveness of the formulation.

In the current study, published in the journal Science, the researchers tested REGN-COV2 in rhesus macaques, which manifest mild Covid-19 symptoms, and in golden hamsters, which show symptoms that are much more severe, including rapid weight loss.

Covid-19 survivors are returning to hospitals with reduced heart functions

It has been evident that the impact of Covid-19 is way beyond influenza like conditions. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Mittal, Director & HOD, Adult CTVS (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery), Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh talks about how the heart is impacted by the virus.

A growing number of researches have suggested that many Covid-19 survivors have experienced some or the other kind of heart damage. Many of them did not have any heart diseases earlier neither were they sick enough to be hospitalised. However, health experts later worried about an increase in heart failure. A few reports have also suggested that when imaging tests were taken months after Covid-19 recovery, patients have displayed lasting damage to the heart muscles.

For this and other provisions, we are still awaiting language from the administration as negotiations on the overall funding amount continue."

Pregnancy during coronavirus: 9 Precautions you should take before visiting hospitals

Precautions to Take

The most important thing is to not get stressed out, especially during the initial weeks. Taking long showers, meditating, or reading good books can help pregnant women relax their mind. Here are some additional precautions everyone should take to safeguard themselves:

Be extra cautious by not stepping out of the home unless necessary. Avoid crowded places.

Eat healthy food like vegetables, fruits, and nuts to strengthen the immune system.

Wash your hands regularly with certified hand wash and sanitizers.

Consider booking virtual prenatal consultations instead of in-person visits to your gynecologist. Before choosing to consult a doctor online, it's important to choose a hospital that's renowned, reliable & puts people over profits.

Only visit the hospital or clinic for mandatory prenatal procedures like ultrasound, blood tests, and fetal testing.

Request for door delivery of medications and try to stock up on them so that, you don't have to step out.

Ensure that the hospital has increased the cleaning frequency for all surface areas with certified disinfectants.

Check if all healthcare equipment is thoroughly disinfected after use on each patient.

Check with your healthcare provider and make sure that patients with coronavirus are kept isolated. It's important to ensure that pregnant women do not come in contact with COVID patients when visiting the hospital.

Novel coronavirus can survive on skin for 9 hours: Study

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, may linger on human skin for nine hours, much longer than the flu viruses can, according to a study.

The influenza A virus (IAV), in contrast, remained viable on human skin for nearly two hours, said the researchers including those from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, found that both the viruses were rapidly inactivated on skin with a hand sanitiser.

The finding underscores the importance of hand washing or using a sanitiser to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Coronavirus in US: White House ceremony for SC nominee was a super spreader event, says Fauci

Anthony Fauci, America's top infectious disease expert, has identified the September 27 White House ceremony to nominate conservative Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court as a "super spreader" event.

"I think the data speaks for themselves. We had a super-spreader event in the White House and it was in a situation where people were crowded together and were not wearing masks. So the data speak for themselves," Fauci said in an interview on CBS Radio on Friday.

Fauci's remarks came after a government memo, dated Wednesday and obtained by ABC News, revealed that at least "34 White House staffers and other contacts" have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in recent days.

China joins WHO-backed vaccine programme COVAX rejected by Trump

China has joined a global scheme for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccine backed by the World Health Organization (WHO), it said on Friday, giving a major boost to an initiative shunned by US President Donald Trump.

Beijing's latest bid to join the global fight against the coronavirus follows criticism over its handling of the pandemic, which has contributed to a growing unfavourable view of China in advanced nations, a recent survey showed.

"We are taking this concrete step to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines, especially to developing countries, and hope more capable countries will also join and support COVAX," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement.
