COVID-19 update: As at 13 October 2020, Zimbabwe had 8 036 confirmed cases, including 7 632 recoveries and 230 deaths.


 



Coronavirus update: India cases at 72,39,390; recovery rate at 87.05%


 

 

 

Coronavirus update: A day after recording its lowest single-day addition to Covid tally since August 18, India on Tuesday registered a spike of 63,517 cases, taking the total count to 72,39,390, and the death toll reached 110,617.

 

About 47 per cent of the Covid-19 deaths in the country had been recorded among those aged below 60 years, the Centre said on Tuesday, cautioning against any laxity towards taking precautions. It also stated that respiratory diseases escalate in winter.

 

Coronavirus vaccine update: One of China’s leading vaccine developers is working on a plan to inoculate students going overseas with Covid-19 shots that are yet to get regulatory approval, according to people familiar with the matter, as the country pushes scientific boundaries in the race for a viable immunization.

 

World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 38,347,804. While 28,836,260 have recovered, 1,090,179 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 8,089,929 cases. It is followed by India, which has 72,39,390 cases, Brazil (5,114,823) and Russia (1,326,178).

 


Odisha's coronavirus tally jumps to 259,541 with 2,604 fresh


Odisha's Covid-19 tally surged to 2,59,541 on Wednesday as 2,604 people tested positive for the disease, while 15 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 1,072, a health department official said.

 

The state's quarantine centres reported 1,511 infections and the remaining cases were detected during contact tracing.

Jharkhand reports 701 new coronavirus cases, seven fresh fatalities


Jharkhand's Covid-19 tally mounted to 93,736 as 701 more people tested positive for the infection, a health department official said on Wednesday.

 

Seven more patients succumbed to the disease, taking the state's coronavirus death toll to 805, he said.

 

Of the fresh fatalities, four were recorded in Ranchi, two in Dhanbad and one in Chatra. 

 

 

Germany coronavirus update: 5,132 new Covid cases, tally at 334,585

Germany has reported 5,132 new Covid-19 cases, taking the country's tally to 334,585, health officials said on Wednesday.

 

The data released on Wednesday by the Robert Koch Institute showed the number of new infections rose more than 1,000 compared to 4,122 on Tuesday and the fatalities went up by 43, Xinhua news agency reported.

 

The previous daily high since April was registered on Saturday as 4,721 cases were added. 

 

 

COVID-19 linked to sudden permanent hearing loss in some rare cases, say scientists

Although uncommon, infection with the novel coronavirus may cause sudden permanent hearing loss in some patients, according to a study which is the first case report linking the disabling condition to COVID-19 in the UK.

 

According to the scientists, including those from the University College London in the UK, awareness of this possible side effect is important since a prompt course of steroid treatment can reverse the hearing loss.

 

They said while the causes are not very clear, the condition sometimes follows a viral infection, such as flu or herpes.

 

The research, published in the journal BMJ Case Reports, describes the case of a 45 year old man with asthma who was referred to the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital in the UK after suddenly experiencing hearing loss in one ear while being treated for COVID-19.

 

China coronavirus update: Over 4 million tests conducted in Qingdao city

The coronavirus has killed 4,634 people with 85,611 confirmed infections, including 241 active cases, in China.

 

No additional Covid-19 cases have been reported in Qingdao as of Tuesday, following an outbreak of new cases that appeared over the weekend, officials said, adding that over 4.2 million people in the city have been tested out of its 9 million population.

 

On Monday, the city reported 12 new cases, including six asymptomatic ones, though officials maintained that the city was at a low risk of a community-level spread, state-run Global Times reported on Wednesday. 

 

Mizoram coronavirus update: 10 new Covid-19 cases, active count at 119

As many as 10 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours from Mizoram, the State's Information and Public Relations Department (DIPR) informed on Wednesday.

 

At present, there 119 active cases of Covid-19 in the state.

 

According to the state administration, 2,212 total cases of novel Coronavirus recorded in Mizoram till Tuesday. A total of 2,093 people recovered in this period while no fatalities were reported so far.

India's active cases at lowest since Sep 3; recovery rate goes past 87%


With 74,632 new daily recoveries, India's recovery rate has improved to 87.05%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.53%.  

 


Donald Trump says he feels like 'Superman' after coronavirus treatment


US President Donald Trump has said that he felt like a "Superman" after his experimental Covid-19 treatment and boasted about his new immunity to the disease which has claimed the lives of 216,000 Americans.

 

Trump, who tested positive for COVID-19 on October 1 and was admitted to a military hospital for three nights and four days, declared himself cured after he was treated with an experimental antibody drug cocktail.

World Bank approves $12 bn to help developing countries get Covid vaccines


The World Bank approved $12 billion to help developing countries purchase novel coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines and treatments, the organization said in a statement.

 

"The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today approved an envelope of $12 billion for developing countries to finance the purchase and distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, tests, and treatments for their citizens," the release said on Tuesday.  

 


Oil prices steady as rising coronavirus cases stokes demand concerns


Oil prices were steady on Wednesday on concerns that fuel demand will continue to falter as rising coronavirus cases across Europe and in the United States, the world's biggest oil consumer, could impede economic growth.

 

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) said in its monthly report on Tuesday that oil demand in 2021 will rise by 6.54 million barrels per day (bpd) to 96.84 million bpd, 80,000 bpd less than its forecast a month ago, as a result of the economic dislocations caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The global coronavirus cases now have breached the 38 million cases mark. The total caseload now stands at 38,361,289 while 1,090,811 people have succumbed to the virus globally.
