Zimbabwe COVID19 Update
COVID-19 update: As at 21 February 2021, Zimbabwe had 35 796 confirmed
cases, including 32 125 recoveries and 1 436 deaths. Zimbabwe has started
rolling out the vaccination programme targeting frontline workers first
having received 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine.
Chinese doctors to help administer Covid-19 vaccines in Zimbabwe
Chinese medical doctors are in Zimbabwe to help local personnel to
effectively administer the Covid-19 vaccine brought from the Asian country
yesterday as the two Republics continue to exploit the good bilateral ties
in fighting the pandemic.
President Xi Jinping's administration said China remained committed to
helping Zimbabwe fight the virus which is threatening populations and health
services across the world.
Covid: WHO pleads with Tanzania to start reporting cases
The World Health Organization has urged Tanzania to start reporting
coronavirus cases and share its data.
Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world to not publish data on
Covid-19 cases. It last did so in May, when about 500 cases and 20 deaths
were recorded. The following month, President John Magufuli declared
Tanzania "coronavirus-free".
But concern is growing about the possibility of a hidden epidemic .The WHO's
plea comes after a spate of deaths of government officials.
The vice-president of Tanzania's semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar, Seif
Sharif Hamad, died on Wednesday after his party said he had contracted
Covid-19. He was the most prominent politician in Tanzania to have openly
declared that he had the virus. The head of the civil service, John Kijazi,
also died on Wednesday but no reason was given for his death.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said
in a statement: "We extend our condolences to our Tanzanian sisters and
brothers on the recent passing of a senior Tanzanian leader as well as the
government's chief secretary." He then went on to urge Tanzania to start
reporting Covid-19 cases and share its data.
While it is difficult to know the extent of the spread of coronavirus in
Tanzania without this data, he said that Tanzanians travelling outside the
country have tested positive for coronavirus. "This underscores the need for
Tanzania to take robust action both to safeguard their own people and
protect populations in these countries and beyond," he said.
President Magufuli had previously played down the virus and refused to take
measures to curb its spread. The health minister said earlier this month
that Tanzania had no plans to vaccinate. However, on Friday, while giving a
speech at Mr Kijazi's funeral, Mr Magafuli appeared to admit that the virus
was circulating in Tanzania. He said Tanzania had defeated Covid-19 last
year and would win again this year. Then on Sunday Mr Magufuli encouraged
people to wear masks to avoid infection. But he urged people to use
locally-made masks, saying without evidence that some of the imported ones
were not safe.
Anxious and frightened: Without vaccines, health-care workers in Mozambique
dying of COVID-19
There are some days where Dr. Emilia Noormahomed gets so anxious about
contracting COVID-19 that she feels sick -- "like I can't breathe," she
says. It's a fear and anxiety shared by many of her colleagues as the death
toll of those they know climb each day.
"We are not only seeing health workers dying, physicians die, but also every
day we hear about someone that we know who passed away of COVID - every day
now. So, it's really very painful, very sad," Noormahomed, a microbiologist
at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane School of Medicine in Mozambique, told
CTV News via video.
COVID-19 is sweeping through her country, with hospitals reaching capacity
as the population grapples with a surge in cases. The city of Chimoio
announced plans to expand its morgue to accommodate the rising number of
COVID-19 deaths.
"Mozambique was once an example of managing Covid-19 in Africa and we were
praised for our ability to stop the first wave of infections from Covid-19.
But now we are one of the countries with one of the fastest increases in
cases in Africa," its president, Filipe Nyusi, said earlier this month
during a presidential address.
In Mozambique, at least seven physicians have died, along with an unknown
number of nurses.
A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS
In Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, some 140 extra beds have been set up
in tents by the city's main hospital. They are trying to cope with the surge
in COVID-19 patients hit with the B.1.351 variant first discovered in South
Africa.
"This second wave is hard, it's getting hard for us," said Dr. Lucia
Chambal, an internal medicine specialist at Hospital Central de Maputo and
COVID-19 co-ordinator, over Zoom.
"We can see younger people coming to the hospital. We have people dying in
younger age, with no comorbidities so this variant is rare, it's very, very
dangerous."
