Zimbabwe COVID19 Update
As at 24 February 2021, Zimbabwe had 35 960 confirmed cases, including 32
410 recoveries and 1 456 deaths.
Tanzania enhances measures to curb COVID-19
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania-After months of denial, Tanzania's government has
finally reckoned the danger posed by COVID-19, urging its citizens to take
precautions.
Health Minister Dorothy Gwajima said the country has devised various
measures to fight the coronavirus. "Wear a clean mask to protect yourself,"
she said in a statement Thursday. The new measures come days after the World
Health Organization warned authorities in the East African country to
implement public health measures to fight the pandemic. Local and
international activists have criticized the government for its sluggish
approach in handling the pandemic amid the deadly resurgence of new virus
strains.
President John Magufuli, who repeatedly mocked mask-wearing, has
surprisingly softened his stance, urging people to take precautions.
Addressing worshippers at St Peters' parish in Dar as Salaam Sunday,
Magufuli, who had also declared COVID-19 vaccine unnecessary, urged
Tanzanians to take precautions against coronavirus as advised by health
authorities.
As part of the government's strategy to curb the spread of the virus, public
transport company UDART issued new guidelines for commuters in Dar es
Salaam, requiring them to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Gwajima
asked Tanzanians to eat a balanced diet containing vegetables and fruits and
use alternative remedies that are potentially useful to fight respiratory
infections.
Tanzania has so far recorded 509 coronavirus cases and 21 deaths, with 183
recoveries.
SA COVID-19 vaccine rollout speeds up
SA is on track to vaccinate 80 000 healthcare workers in the first two weeks
of the vaccination programme, with 40 000 complete by Wed.
Another 80 000 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine will arrive on Sat, 27 Feb
2021. Healthcare workers in SA are 3-4 times more likely to get COVID-19
than the rest of the population. 54,685 health workers who have been
infected in the public sector, with 779 deaths.
Getting vaccines has involved complicated negotiations. More than 133 poor
countries have not yet received a single dose of the vaccine while many
richer countries have secured more doses than they need. Government has
chosen to get vaccines through various channels including from individual
manufacturers, through COVAX and through AU.
"We have signed Non-Disclosure Agreements with most of the leading
manufacturers. This allows us to gain critical insight into their supply
lines, their manufacturing plans and possible blockages in the manufacturing
pipeline. It also allows us to pursue negotiations over prices, volumes and
timelines for delivery," Mkhize said.
South Africa's Sisonke plan allows healthcare workers to get the Johnson &
Johnson vaccine under research conditions. Recent studies in SA show that
67% of citizens would likely take the vaccine and only 12% said they would
not. So far, almost 500 000 people have signed up for vaccinations on the
EVDS system.
SA is selling its stock of the AstraZeneca vaccine to the African Union at
cost price.
Kenya confirms 4 more COVID deaths, 105 infections
Kenya's Health Ministry confirmed four new COVID-19 related deaths and 105
infections Monday. "Sadly, four patients have succumbed to the disease,
pushing our cumulative fatalities to 1,827," the ministry tweeted.
The latest confirmed infections -- 88 Kenyans and 17 foreigners -- were
detected out of a sample size of 3,573 tested in the last 24 hours, bringing
the tally of confirmed infections so far to 104,306, it added. The ministry
updated the cumulative number of tests for COVID-19 across the country of
over 54 million people to 1,269,346.
"On a positive note, 49 patients have recovered from the disease, 34 from
home-based and isolation care while 15 are from various health facilities.
Total recoveries now stand at 85,626," it said. In late January, the
ministry announced that it would vaccinate 1.25 million people for COVID-19
between February and June, "when it is expected that global vaccine stocks
will be limited."
Health officials also announced the intention to build a capacity of more
than 23,000 health care workers, including 8,000 health volunteers in areas
of vaccine administration, logistics management, data capture, reporting and
monitoring.
Nigeria trains healthcare workers in COVID-19 vaccination
LAGOS, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in Nigeria have rolled out a
national training program for healthcare workers who will be involved in the
COVID-19 vaccination at national and state levels in preparation for the
arrival of coronavirus vaccines into the country. Speaking at a media
briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Faisal Shuaib, head of the National Primary
Health Care Development Agency, said at least 13,000 healthcare workers are
being trained in the first phase of the program. The training involves
participants from the national, state and local government levels, he said,
noting that by March 1, 2021, the training will be extended to the ward and
facility levels where over 100,000 health workers will be trained. The
training program is aimed at updating the skills of healthcare workers in
the effective handling, storage and administration of COVID-19 vaccines
ahead of their arrival, the senior health official said.
