Coronavirus  update: With 18,106 fresh Covid-19 cases, India's caseload now stands at 10,432,526. The country's death toll has mounted to 150,835. With 1,954,553 cases, Maharashtra has the highest number of coronavirus cases, followed by Karnataka 924,137, Andhra Pradesh  883,876, Tamil Nadu 823,181, and Kerala 790,882. Setting the pace for vaccine rollout next week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a virtual meeting with all chief ministers on Monday.

 

The government is in the final stages of due diligence to ink a supply deal with Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, which have got approval for emergency use of their vaccines.

 

World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 89,324,792. While 63,990,133 have recovered, 1,920,754 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 22,446,955 cases, and 378,085 have died from the disease there. It is followed by India, which has 10,432,526 cases, Brazil (8,015,920), Russia (3,355,794), UK (2,957,472). The White House coronavirus task force in its latest report said that the United States may have its own version of a more transmissible variant of Covid-19 that might be helping fuel the already aggressive spread of the virus.

 


RS Sharma, former Trai chief, to head empowered panel for Covid-19 vaccine


The Union government has appointed RS Sharma, former Trai chief, as the chairperson of an empowered committee for administration of Covid-19 vaccine. This has come days ahead of the mega vaccination drive is to start in India. He has also been included as a member of the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration of Covid-19 that was formed in August 2020 and is headed by Niti Aayog panel member VK Paul.

 

Sharma was the first person to officially initiate a discussion on vaccination delivery in the government in the summer of 2020 when Covid-19 cases peaked. He had made a presentation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi then.

 


Beijing on alert after Covid-19 spike in neighbouring province; 9 mn vaccinated in China


Beijing has gone on an alert mode following a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in the neighbouring Hebei province while China has administered nine million coronavirus vaccines so far in a stepped-up nationwide drive to contain the virus.

 

The National Health Commission (NHC) on Saturday reported 33 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases, of whom 17 were locally transmitted and the rest arrived from outside the mainland.

 

Fourteen locally transmitted cases were reported in north China's Hebei province, the NHC said.

 


Seven-day institutional quarantine for UK travellers coming to Delhi


Travellers coming from the UK to the national capital will have to undergo a seven-day institutional quarantine and a seven-day home quarantine even if they test negative for Covid-19 on arrival, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Friday.

 

"To protect Delhiites from exposure to the virus from the UK, the Delhi government has taken important decisions. Travellers coming from UK will have to mandatorily undergo a self-paid RT-PCR test on arrival at the airport," the chief minister said

 


UK study finds arthritis drugs offer life-saving treatment for coronavirus


Treating critically ill Covid-19 patients with drugs typically used for arthritis may significantly improve survival, a landmark UK study has found.

 

The findings come from a trial which evaluates the effect of treatments on a combination of survival and length of time patients need support in an intensive care unit (ICU).

 

Patients across the UK who are admitted to ICU are now set to receive the treatments using the drugs tocilizumab and sarilumab, which can reduce the time spent in hospital by up to 10 days, according to the findings of the study which were revealed this week.

 


Jharkhand coronavirus update: 207 new cases reported, tally at 116,436


Jharkhand's Covid-19 tally rose to 1,16,436 as 207 more people tested positive for the infection, a health department official said on Saturday.

 

The death toll increased to 1,043 after two persons from Ranchi and Dhanbad succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, he said. 

 


Brazil reports world's 1st re-infection case with Covid-19 variant


A Brazilian woman has become the first person in the world to be re-infected with a variant of the novel coronavirus known as E484K, state media reported.

 

The case, discovered by researchers from the D'Or Institute for Research and Education in Bahia state, was detected in a 45-year-old woman who had tested positive for Covid-19 in May 2020 and was diagnosed again in October with the mutation, Xinhua news agency quoted the state media report as saying on Friday.

 

In both cases, the patient did not present serious symptoms.

 

Originally identified in South Africa, the E484K mutation has been previously detected in Brazil, but this is the first case of re-infection with it.

 


Maharashtra coronavirus update: Thane district reports 478 new Covid-19 cases, 8 deaths


With the addition of 478 fresh coronavirus positive cases on Friday, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra rose to 2,46,331, an official said on Saturday.

 

As eight more persons died due to the viral infection, the cumulative death toll in the district reached 6,014, he said, adding that the mortality rate in the district now stands at 2.44 per cent.

 

A total of 2,36,153 patients have recovered from the COVID-19 disease in the district so far, which he said has improved the recovery rate to 95.87 per cent. The number of active cases is 4,164.

 


Coal demand to rise in post-Covid era, must scale up production: CIL chief


Coal production in the country needs to be scaled up as demand for the dry fuel is expected to rise with increasing economic activities in the post-COVID era, an official said on Friday.

 

Coal India Ltd chairman and managing director Pramod Agrawal said the miner is emphasising on raising its output as it is committed to fulfil the energy requirement of the country

 


Global Covid-19 caseload top 88.8mn: Johns Hopkins


The overall global coronavirus caseload has topped 88.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.91 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

 

In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 88,821,629 and 1,911,637, respectively.

 

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 21,857,293 and 368,736, respectively, according to the CSSE.

 

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,413,417, while the country's death toll soared to 150,570.

 


Second dry run of Covid-19 vaccination held at 150 sites across Delhi


A second dry run of the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out was conducted at 150 sites across all 11 districts of Delhi on Friday, officials said.

 

They said 10 vaccination centres were chosen in South Delhi for the dry run, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Safdarjung Hospital, the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital, and the Pushpwati Singhania Hospital and Research Institute.

 

In South East district, 19 sites were chosen across three sub-divisions.
