The local unit was 0.1% weaker against the greenback despite an 11% increase
in allotments today. The total bids allotted rose 11.4% to USD41.6m vs
US$37.4m last week. 

 

On the alternative market the ZWL remained stable in the week in the
ZWL120-ZWL122 band while most established retail outlets except big
supermarkets were still using a rate of ZWL110. Hardware shops and
wholesalers are still charging 118-120 while some street money changers
giving ZWL140 a go for EcoCash or ZIPIT. The use of Bureau de Changes for
individual transactions is expected to ease the pressure on street rates as
individuals get access to currency through formal channels. Furthermore, if
more companies get to access FX on the formal market, that will ease
pressure on the Alternative Market rates.
