Zimbabwe COVID19 Update

COVID-19 update: As at 31 March 2021, Zimbabwe had 36 882 confirmed cases, including 34 686 recoveries and 1 523 deaths. To date, a total of 76 995 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

France Sees Peak Coming; Pfizer Shot Effectiveness: Virus Update

Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE’s covid vaccine remained more than 91% effective after six months, according to data from a final-stage trial released Thursday. The report also suggested the inoculation worked against the variant that arose in South Africa.

The epidemic may peak within 7 to 10 days in France, followed two weeks later by intensive-care admissions, Health Minister Olivier Veran said. Slovakia completed a cabinet reshuffle after a political crisis over buying Russian vaccines. Infections surged in Iran after a holiday.

Pfizer Shot 91% Effective After Six Months
Pfizer Inc.’s Covid-19 vaccine <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-01/pfizer-shot-remains-more-than-91-effective-after-six-months> remained highly effective after six months, according to new long-term results that the company said could be used to seek an expansion of its regulatory status.

Follow-up data from a final-stage trial of 46,307 people showed the vaccine was 91.3% effective in preventing symptomatic cases starting one week after the second dose through as long as six months. In the U.S. alone, the efficacy rate was 92.6%, according to a report Thursday by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech SE.

French Minister Sees Virus Peak Approaching
The peak of the epidemic could be <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQVHEYDWRGG2> reached within 7 to 10 days, Health Minister Olivier Veran told during France Inter radio interview Thursday. That would be followed two weeks later by a peak of patients in ICU units. Veran is hoping the AstraZeneca vaccination for those under 55 will resume soon, once the European Medicine Agency completes its review.

German President Vaccinated With Astra Shot
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier received his first dose of AstraZeneca Plc’s Covid-19 vaccine and urged citizens to get themselves inoculated as soon as possible.

“I trust the vaccines that have been approved in Germany,” Steinmeier, 65, whose position as head of state is largely ceremonial, said in an emailed statement. “Vaccination is the decisive step on the path out of the pandemic,” he added.

Germany this week halted the use of the Astra shot on people younger than 60 due to concerns about potential side effects.

Czechs Mull Partial School Reopening
The Czech Republic, which is fighting one of the worst outbreaks of pandemic in Europe, reported 5,779 deaths due to Covid-19 in March alone, making it the deadliest month since the beginning of pandemic.

Education Minister Robert Plaga proposed partially re-opening schools as of April 12. Other curbs will stay, however, as the pandemic outbreak is proving hard to control, the minister said.

Iran’s Infections Rise After Persian New Year
Iran reported 11,750 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, marking the highest number of daily infections since Dec. 5 and a week of rising figures in the aftermath of the Persian new year’s holiday. The health ministry reported 94 deaths overnight, bringing the country’s total figures to nearly 1.9 million cases and 62,759 fatalities.

Slovakia Reshuffles Government After Vaccine Dispute

Slovakia completed the <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQVKR7DWX2PS> reconstruction of its government after a political crisis over buying Russian coronavirus vaccines forced the prime minister to swap posts with his finance chief.

President Zuzana Caputova swore in a revamped cabinet on Thursday with Eduard Heger as the new prime minister. His predecessor, Igor Matovic, resigned two days earlier and replaced Heger as finance minister, in line with an agreement among the four parties in the ruling coalition.

Poland Reports Record New Cases
Poland <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQVMFEDWX2PZ> reported a record 35,251 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, according to Health Ministry data.

The death toll jumped by 621 cases, compared with 520 cases the week before. The country of 38 million has so far administered 6.27 million vaccine doses, including 2.04 million second shots.

Hong Kong to Resume BioNTech Shots
Hong Kong <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-01/hong-kong-to-resume-biontech-shots-monday-after-defects-scare> will resume administering BioNTech SE Covid shots on Monday after authorities concluded that the recent emergence of defective vials didn’t pose a safety risk, capping a 12-day halt that’s further damaged confidence in the city’s dismal vaccine rollout.

The tens of thousands of residents who missed their appointments for first and second doses during the suspension will be rescheduled, with those slated to receive second shots to be given slots within the first few days of resumption, according to Patrick Nip, secretary for the civil service.

Sweden Keeps Stance on Astra Vaccine
Sweden’s Public Health Authority inadvertently issued a statement saying it halted vaccinations with AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine. It later said by phone that its stance hadn’t changed. Sweden is currently giving the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine only to people 65 years and older.

Austria Backs AstraZeneca Dose
Austria’s national vaccination panel recommended the unrestricted use of AstraZeneca’s vaccine, for the time being.

The panel will discuss the recommendation again after the European Medicines Agency has reassessed data on any blood-clotting issues linked to the vaccine next week, it said in a statement.

Biden Criticizes Baseball Team’s Plan for Crowds
U.S. President Joe Biden called it “a mistake” for the Texas Rangers baseball team to allow full attendance at games as the season kicks off while the country continues to battle the Covid-19 pandemic.

“They should listen to Dr. Fauci and the experts,” Biden said during an ESPN interview broadcast on Wednesday night, referring to Anthony Fauci, his health adviser and top infectious disease expert. “It is not responsible.”

Ontario Reportedly Returning to Lockdown

The Canadian province of Ontario will return to a lockdown on Saturday, placing additional restrictions on stores and closing gyms and hair salons for 28 days in an effort to get Covid-19 under control, CBC News <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-01/canada-s-ontario-to-be-in-lockdown-for-28-days-cbc-reports> reported, citing multiple sources.

The new rules to be announced by Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Thursday are intended to counter coronavirus’s spread in Canada’s most populous province, which includes Toronto and the capital city of Ottawa, CBC said. The restrictions would not be as tight as the province-wide lockdown that was imposed in December, the sources told CBC.

Ontario added 2,333 new cases of Covid-19 on March 30, bringing its total case count to 349,903, according to Public Health Ontario.

Japan Seeks Restrictions in 3 Regions
Japan’s government is seeking to impose new restrictions on Osaka and two other regions to control the coronavirus, Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said Thursday.

The new measures would allow local governments in Osaka, Hyogo and Miyagi to order bars and restaurants to close early, and impose fines on those that refuse.

Case numbers in Osaka hit 599 Wednesday, higher than Tokyo, despite having a population only two-thirds the size of the capital. Infections have been rising in Osaka since a state of emergency was lifted at the end of February.

WHO Says China’s Jabs Appear Safe
Coronavirus vaccines developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd. and Sinopharm Group Co. appeared safe and effective in an interim analysis, though the World Health Organization wants more details on the elderly and infirm.

The companies applied for the WHO’s emergency-use listing and the group’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization reviewed the information gathered thus far, according to details reported by Agence France Presse and confirmed by a person familiar with the matter.

Chinese Cluster Grows as City Gets Tested
China <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQUX2JDWLU73> reported 6 new confirmed cases and 23 asymptomatic cases in the city of Ruili in the southwestern province of Yunnan, near the border with Myanmar.

The cluster is China’s first since mid-February, and authorities are testing Ruili’s entire population of 210,400. Yunnan boasts caves that are the natural habitat for bats, from which Chinese scientists found a distant relative of the Sars-CoV-2 virus years before the pathogen caused an outbreak in Wuhan.

Four of the six confirmed cases are Chinese nationals, while the other two are from Myanmar. All Ruili residents must quarantine at home for one week
