Italy Eyes Vaccine Hubs; India Has 2nd-Most Cases: Virus Update

India overtook Brazil as the country with the second-most cases in the world. Indonesia is sticking with Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s vaccine even as a <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-11/sinovac-shot-cuts-risk-of-symptomatic-covid-in-half-in-key-study> study raised new concerns over the efficacy of the China’s suite of Covid-19 shots.

Italy is in talks to set up vaccine <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-13/italy-in-talks-to-set-up-vaccine-making-hubs-with-state-funding> production hubs as the government seeks to build up domestic capacity amid concern the country risks missing its latest target for inoculations.

The U.K. hit its goal of offering a shot to all those over 50 three days early while England <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-12/england-s-lockdown-eases-again-as-shops-and-pub-gardens-reopen> reopened shops, pub gardens, gyms and hair salons after months of lockdown. The weekly death toll from Covid-19 in the U.S. rose for the first time since February and infections climbed for a fourth straight week, despite surging vaccinations.

New Study of U.K. Variant
The <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-12/dominant-u-s-variant-not-as-deadly-as-feared-study-finds> Covid-19 variant that emerged in the U.K. and became the dominant strain in the U.S. isn’t as deadly as earlier research indicated, although it’s confirmed to be faster-spreading than other versions, according to a study.

Among 339 patients with the coronavirus, 36% of those infected with the B.1.1.7 strain that arose in the U.K. became severely ill or died, according to research published Monday in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, compared with 38% of those who had non-B.1.1.7 infections.

“We’re not saying it’s nothing, but it’s not worse in terms of outcome in our study, in our setting,” said Eleni Nastouli, a co-author of the study and an associate professor at University College London.

Covid Tests at Work in Germany
Germany’s ruling coalition has agreed on a regulation requiring companies to offer employees <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRHLEDDWX2PS> on-site Covid-19 tests, according to Labor Minister Hubertus Heil. The regulation, which is set to be approved in Cabinet later on Tuesday and take effect next Monday, applies to both public-sector and private firms, Heil said. Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said companies will have to pay for the tests themselves as a contribution to the country’s battle against the pandemic.

Daily Record of Infections in Osaka
<https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRHKU0DWX2PV> Osaka, the second largest metropolitan area in Japan, is set to report a new daily record high of over 1,000 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, according to Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura. The area has been the epicenter of a new flare up less than a month after many areas of Japan exited a state of emergency.

Restrictions were reimposed in the Osaka area, with eateries instructed to close early, Yoshimura said he may ask the central government for stronger measures such as a new emergency. Experts have also expressed concerns that the similar uptick trend may happen in the capital Tokyo, which reported 510 Covid cases.

Indonesia Sticks With Sinovac
Indonesia will <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRHFYPDWRGG5> keep using the vaccines developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech and the U.K.’s AstraZeneca because they met the standards set by the World Health Organization, according to the government.

Concern is mounting that China’s Covid-19 vaccines are less effective in quelling the coronavirus disease than other products, after remarks by the head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention about their lower protection rate went viral on social media.

Indonesia will wait for the Chinese government’s move on the potential for mixing different types of vaccines to boost their efficacy rates, spokesperson for the Health Ministry Siti Nadia Tarmizi said.

Moderna Shots Arriving in England
The first jabs of <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRHKM8DWLU6A> Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine will be delivered in England on Tuesday, the National Health Service said in an emailed statement. Moderna’s vaccine will be an alternative to the Astra’s vaccine for those aged 18-29, in line with guidance from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

India Passes Brazil in Cases
India, which overtook Brazil to again become the second worst-hit country, reported 161,736 new cases on Tuesday, taking the total count to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRHIYDHHWW75> almost 13.7 million. More than 171,000 deaths have been reported while 108.5 million vaccinations have been administered, according to data from the local health ministry.

India <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-12/russia-s-sputnik-v-vaccine-gets-nod-for-emergency-use-in-india> approved Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine for emergency use on Monday -- the day it saw a record one-day surge in new infections as a deadly second wave grips the country, <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-09/second-virus-wave-overwhelms-india-hospitals-as-shots-run-low> overwhelming health care infrastructure in some parts and forcing partial lockdowns.

HK Vaccination Bookings Surge
Bookings for coronavirus vaccinations jumped in <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-13/hong-kong-vaccine-bookings-double-on-hopes-curbs-will-ease> Hong Kong as the government said it could ease social-distancing rules for inoculated people in a bid to encourage more of the population to sign up for shots.

About 13,500 people made online reservations for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccinations at community centers and another 3,300 booked for the Sinovac Biotech shot in the 24 hours to 8 p.m. Monday, the government said in a statement.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said that “vaccine bubbles” might be considered and restrictions on places such as restaurants and bars loosened if more people are inoculated.

Italy Eyes Vaccine Hubs
The government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi is in discussions to set up vaccine <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-13/italy-in-talks-to-set-up-vaccine-making-hubs-with-state-funding> production hubs in Italy using state funding, according to the director-general of the nation’s drug regulator. The aim is to start production in the fourth quarter, Nicola Magrini, head of the Italian Medicines Agency, told Bloomberg in an interview.

Italy’s attempt to build up domestic capacity comes as Draghi raises pressure on drugmakers to speed up vaccine deliveries, talking regularly to chief executive officers to seek additional supplies and bring deliveries forward, officials said.

With a lockdown weighing on the devastated economy, the government risks missing its latest target of 500,000 vaccinations a day by the end of this month.

Risk of Fourth Wave in Malaysia
A fourth wave of Covid-19 infections could sweep <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRG6MCT0AFBM> Malaysia, Defense Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said at a briefing, citing Health Ministry data.

Malaysia’s forecast of 500 daily Covid cases by mid-May does not look encouraging due to falling compliance toward virus protocols, said Health Minister Adham Baba in a separate briefing.

Meanwhile, <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRFXHWT1UM0W> Indonesia will reopen of some tourist sites but still imposes an exodus ban during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, according to Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno.

Canada Passes U.S. in Grim Metric
For the first time since the pandemic began, Canada has passed a grim <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-12/canada-overtakes-u-s-in-daily-covid-cases-for-first-time> milestone, with more new Covid-19 cases per capita than the U.S.

There have been roughly 22 new recorded cases per 100,000 people in the country over the past 7-days. Ontario is being hit the hardest with hospitals coming under increasing strain, especially in Toronto, the country’s largest city.

“This is the worst moment of the pandemic, thus far,” Kevin Smith, Chief Executive Officer of the University Health Network, said in an interview. “Our ICUs are full.”

Australia Won’t Buy J&J Vaccine
Australia’s federal government confirmed that it <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRH19GDWX2PU> won’t purchase Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose Covid-19 vaccine, citing similarities of technology in J&J and AstraZeneca vaccines, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The government recently said he won’t set a new target date for all Australians to receive their first Covid-19 vaccine dose, as health concerns about the AstraZeneca shot and European export restrictions delay the rollout.

The nation’s health authorities also <https://www.tga.gov.au/alert/astrazeneca-chadox1-s-covid-19-vaccine-1> said a second case of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia had been found in a person following the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine. This equates to a frequency of one in 350,000.

U.K. Hits Vaccine Target Early
The U.K. said it hit its target to offer a first vaccine shot to all people over 50 ahead of schedule, a significant boost to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans to unlock more parts of the economy.

The goal was to do so by April 15, and people in their late 40s are expected to be invited to receive vaccines in the “coming days,” the Department of Health and Social Care said.

Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged people who live, work or study in two city boroughs to be tested following an outbreak of new cases linked to the South African variant.

Ireland Limits Astra Shot
Ireland recommended the AstraZeneca vaccine be given to people age 60 and older only, becoming the latest country to restrict its use amid blood clot concerns. People under 60 who have already received a first dose should have the interval before the second shot extended to 16 weeks from 12 weeks “to allow further assessment of the benefits and risks as more evidence becomes available,” the state’s vaccine advisory group said Monday night.

While the vaccine is “highly effective,” authorities recommended the restriction because the reported clotting events carry “a very high risk of death or severe outcome,” the group said.

Russia Curbs Air Travel With Turkey
Russia <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-12/russia-suspends-most-air-travel-with-turkey-until-june-1> suspended most air travel with Turkey, citing rising coronavirus infections, cutting off a key source of tourism revenue to the country amid tensions over Ankara’s support for Ukraine.

Most charter and regular flights will be suspended between April 15 and June 1, but two flights a week will still run between Moscow and Istanbul, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said in a televised briefing Monday. Fully 80% of the cases of Covid-19 identified in Russians returning from abroad were in people who came from Turkey, public-health chief Anna Popova told the same briefing.

Austria’s Capital Extends Lockdown
The city of Vienna extended the regional lockdown measures for the Austrian capital until May 2 as intensive-care resources are increasingly strained by severe cases of coronavirus patients, Mayor Michael Ludwig told reporters. That means non-essential shops, services such as hairdressers will remain closed. Schools will also remain shut for most students until April 25. The lockdown was originally planned to be lifted gradually from next week.

NYC Surpasses 5 Million Doses
New York City surpassed 5 million vaccine doses administered, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday. The city is now doling out over half a million doses a week in its quest to get 5 million of the city’s 8 million residents fully vaccinated by June, he said. A new vaccination site in Times Square opens Monday with dedicated appointments for film, television and theater workers as the city seeks to jump-start New York’s all-important arts and entertainment industry.

U.S. Weekly Death Toll Rises Again
The weekly death toll from Covid-19 in the U.S. rose for the first time since February, topping 7,000 for the period ending Sunday. Fatalities are again averaging about 1,000 a day, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg show. Meanwhile, infections have climbed for four straight weeks -- the longest streak since November. Two weeks ago, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned of “impending doom” even though more people are getting vaccinated.
