Zimbabwe COVID19 Update

COVID-19 update: As at 20 April 2021, Zimbabwe had 37 875 confirmed cases, including 35 058 recoveries and 1 554 deaths. To date, a total of 288 229 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Japan Eyes Tokyo Emergency; India’s Global Record: Virus Update
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/tokyo-seeks-new-state-of-emergency-as-virus-cases-rise> recommended placing Tokyo and other areas under a state of emergency to stem a surge in coronavirus infections.

India posted the world’s <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/india-records-world-s-highest-one-day-surge-in-covid-cases> biggest one-day jump in cases as a deadlier second wave shows no signs of abating and leaves hospitals crammed with patients and short of oxygen.

In the U.S., jobless claims unexpectedly plunged to a <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/u-s-jobless-claims-plunged-last-week-to-fresh-pandemic-low> fresh pandemic low as the job market recovery gathers steam. Meanwhile, Western Europe is <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/europe-takes-steps-to-reopen-as-covid-vaccinations-ramp-up> beginning to loosen restrictions, offering relief for the pandemic-weary region as vaccination programs turn the corner.

Jobless Claims Fall to Pandemic Low
Applications for U.S. state unemployment insurance <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/u-s-jobless-claims-plunged-last-week-to-fresh-pandemic-low> unexpectedly plunged to a fresh pandemic low of 547,000 in the week ended April 17, Labor Department data showed Thursday.

The job market is strengthening as employers look to fill positions that were left empty by restrictions that have now been eased. Growth should speed up even more following a nationwide goal of administering an average of three million vaccinations per day. The data follow strong manufacturing, retail sales and other indicators in recent weeks.

Suga Recommends Tokyo Emergency
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/tokyo-seeks-new-state-of-emergency-as-virus-cases-rise> recommended placing Tokyo, Osaka and other areas under a state of emergency, telling reporters Thursday he will make a formal decision after consulting with experts. Tokyo recorded 861 new cases Thursday, the highest level since late January, while Osaka found 1,242 infections Wednesday, a record.

The emergency is likely to be in place from April 25 to May 11, Jiji Press said. While Japan has so far succeeded in keeping infections and deaths at far lower levels than those seen in much of Europe and the U.S., its vaccine program has yet to kick into high gear.

South Africa Set to Use J&J Shots
South Africa plans to begin administering Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine to the general public after <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/south-africa-set-to-use-j-j-shots-after-resolving-contract-spat> settling a contractual dispute relating to an order for 31 million doses. The first batch of J&J shots being produced at an Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd. plant in the Eastern Cape province is expected to be delivered by April 26. The rollout to people over the age of 60 and other vulnerable groups is set to begin on May 17.

Singapore to Bar India Visitors
Singapore said it will further tighten border controls with India, including a <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/singapore-to-bar-visitors-from-india-on-deteriorating-situation> ban on visitors from the country, because of a “rapidly deteriorating situation” there. Authorities are also stepping up measures to prevent a wider outbreak within Singapore, officials said at a press conference on Thursday.

EU’s Global Vaccine Supply
The European Union <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/eu-keeps-global-vaccine-supply-alive-amid-uneven-home-rollout> authorized the export of 136.1 million doses to 43 countries between Jan. 31 and April 19, according to an internal memo. Around 52.3 million were shipped to Japan, 16.2 million to the U.K. and 12.8 million to Canada.

The data in the document also highlight glaring differences in the efficiency of national vaccination campaigns. While Malta has already administered 67 doses per 100 adults, Bulgaria is only at 11 doses per 100. The average for the whole of the EU is 31.6.

U.K. Firms Facing Financial Distress
The number of U.K. businesses in significant financial distress <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/u-k-sees-record-jump-in-firms-in-significant-financial-distress> jumped the most in at least seven years last quarter, with firms across all sectors seeing their situation deteriorate. There are 723,000 companies facing serious problems, according to a study Thursday - that’s a 15% increase from the end of last year; from a year ago, the number has climbed 42%.

Cigna Has Perks for Vaccinated Workers
Cigna Corp. announced on Thursday that it will <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/cigna-joins-companies-offering-incentives-to-vaccinated-workers> give workers who are fully vaccinated $200 in payments to their health-spending accounts, as well as emergency paid time off they can use to get their shots. U.S. companies are starting to pay workers to get vaccinated, trying to encourage the hesitant or those who just haven’t had a chance to get the jab.

Europe Takes Steps to Reopen
Western Europe is beginning to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/europe-takes-steps-to-reopen-as-covid-vaccinations-ramp-up> loosen restrictions. Italy will ease many of its curbs on Monday, Greece will follow suit in early May, and France will announce the next steps for the country later on Thursday.

Germany may be in a position to open access to vaccination to all adults from the end of May, the Bild newspaper reported Thursday. After a slow start to vaccination programs and more than 640,000 deaths, the region is starting to see progress in inoculations.

U.K. Pressed to Clarify Travel Restart
U.K. lawmakers <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/lawmakers-press-u-k-government-to-clarify-travel-restart> put pressure on the government to clarify by the end of next week its plan to resume air travel, saying the country’s tourism-dependent industries face the risk of a second lost summer. The government has set a goal of restarting leisure travel by May 17 but hasn’t made a final decision to move ahead.

Valneva to Start Covid Shot Final Trial
Valneva SE <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRYCZJT0AFB4> will pit its Covid-19 vaccine against AstraZeneca’s in a phase three trial starting this month. The vaccine appears destined to be sold mostly in the U.K. after the company said talks with the European Commission have been unsuccessful. It’s the only whole, inactivated virus vaccine candidate in the U.K. portfolio.

EU Readies Legal Action Against Astra
The European Union’s executive arm is preparing to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/eu-readies-legal-action-against-astrazeneca-over-missing-doses> start a legal case by the end of the week against AstraZeneca over its failure to deliver its promised number of doses to the bloc. The procedure would take between five and seven weeks and the European Commission has asked capitals to join the process.

Astra delivered just 30 million of its originally committed 120 million doses to the EU in the first quarter. Despite the shortfall, the EU has started to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-21/europe-has-finally-turned-a-corner-on-its-covid-19-vaccinations> turn the corner in its vaccination campaign, and aims to inoculate 70% of its population by the end of the summer.

Thailand Has Highest Daily Deaths
Thailand on Thursday <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRY7KFT0AFB4> reported seven new Covid-19 fatalities, the most in a single day. The country added 1,470 new cases Thursday, increasing for a third-straight day and taking the cumulative total to 48,113. Bangkok reported 446 new cases, taking the city’s infections this month to 4,775.

Singapore Quarantines Hundreds
Singapore has <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/singapore-finds-11-worker-dorm-cases-to-quarantine-hundreds-st> discovered more virus cases in a foreign worker dormitory, raising concerns about reinfections as most of the laborers had previously tested positive.

The government said a 35-year-old Bangladeshi migrant worker staying at the dormitory tested positive for the virus despite having received both doses of vaccine. More than 1,100 people living in the same block as the infected workers will be sent to a government quarantine facility for 14 days, Channelnewsasia reported.

Separately, Singapore will <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QRY40WT0AFB8> require the use of its TraceTogether technology to enter shopping malls, offices, dine-in restaurants, schools, gyms, places of worship and other such gathering places from June 1.

India Has World’s Highest Surge
The situation in India continues to deteriorate, with 15.93 million confirmed cases as of Thursday morning. The 314,835 new cases Thursday were more than the previous one-day gain of 314,312 cases reported by the U.S. in December. The official death toll rose to 184,657.

The unfolding disaster is such that New Delhi’s largest hospital chain <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/new-delhi-hospital-rushes-to-court-to-get-critical-oxygen-supply> had to ask a court for assistance after 1,400 Covid-19 patients were put at risk due to “dangerously low” levels of oxygen.

Two back-to-back emergency hearings ended late Wednesday after an oxygen tanker finally left for one branch of the Max Hospital, which had over 250 patients in a critical state and the lowest level of crucial oxygen. The Delhi High Court’s two-judge panel expressed “shock and dismay” over the government’s neglect and directed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to “beg, borrow, steal” to ensure adequate supply for hospitals.

On social media, Indians are <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-04-21/india-s-covid-tragedy-as-seen-on-twitter-instagram-and-facebook> beseeching each other for help for themselves or their families, with intensive-care unit beds also in short supply.

Singapore-Hong Kong Bubble Delay
Singapore and Hong Kong called off an announcement planned for Thursday on an air travel bubble, according to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-22/singapore-hong-kong-said-to-delay-travel-bubble-announcement> people familiar with the matter. That’s the second time in five months the highly anticipated arrangement appears to have run into obstacles.
