Zimbabwe COVID19 Update


COVID-19 update: As at 10 August 2021, Zimbabwe had 117 258 confirmed cases, including 91 499 recoveries and 3 950 deaths. To date, a total of 1 912 592 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.




 


Coronavirus tally: Global cases of COVID-19 top 203 million and Louisiana is leading U.S. by new cases


The global tally for the coronavirus-borne illness headed above 203.4 million on Tuesday, while the death toll climbed above 4.30 million according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. 

 

The U.S. leads the world with a total of 35.9 million cases and in deaths with 617,321 as the highly infectious delta variant continues to spread fast, especially in states with low vaccination rates. The seven-day average of cases stood at 124,470 on Monday, according to a New York Times tracker, marking the highest level since early February. 

 

Hospitals in states in the deep South are near capacity in some areas and the majority of patients are unvaccinated. Louisiana, with just 37% of residents fully vaccinated, is leading the nation in new cases,the Guardian reported. 

 

On Friday, it had a daily increase of 6,116 cases, 2,421 patients in hospitals and 277 on ventilators. Last week 180 patients died from the virus in Louisiana. India is second by cases at 31.9 million and third by deaths at 428,682 according to its official numbers, which are expected to be undercounted. 

 

Brazil is second in deaths at 563,562, but is third in cases at 20.2 million. Mexico has fourth-highest death toll at 244,690 but has recorded just 2.9 million cases, according to its official numbers. In Europe, Russia continues to pull ahead of the U.K. by deaths at 163,629, while the U.K. has 130,667, making Russia the country with the fifth-highest death toll in the world and highest in Europe.



Latest on worldwide spread of coronavirus


EUROPE

Germany’s vaccination drive has slowed and those people who have not taken up the opportunity to have coronavirus shots will have to take tests to take a full part in public life, Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

The German government will stop offering free tests from October 11 to encourage more vaccinations, sources said.

Austria plans to start vaccine booster shots on October 17, nine months after the first group of people to get the jabs received their second dose.

Britain on Tuesday reported its highest daily death toll since March.

ASIA-PACIFIC

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has talked up reuniting families at Christmas despite surging cases in Sydney and uncertainty over Melbourne’s lockdown.

Myanmar’s army carried out at least 252 attacks and threats against health workers since a February 1 coup, killing at least 25 medics and hampering the response to a resurgent outbreak, a report by a rights groups said.

Police in Thailand fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who took to the streets of Bangkok amid anger over the government’s handling of the pandemic.

South Korea recorded more than 2000 new infections in the past 21 hours, Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday, an almost 50 per cent increase from the previous day and a new record high.

AMERICAS

US President Joe Biden urged Americans in hurricane-prone states to get vaccinated to protect themselves in case they have to evacuate from their homes.

The US State Department said it had lowered the COVID-related travel advisory for Canada to “Level 2 Exercise Increased Caution”.

The Biden administration is reviewing how it can get money to Florida school districts if the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, makes good on threats to withhold pay from school leaders who require masks for students.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the US plans to provide more vaccine doses to Mexico, but declined to say how many.

School districts in Florida and Texas are bucking their Republican governors’ bans on requiring masks for children and teachers as coronavirus cases soar in conservative areas with low vaccination rates.

MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA

Turkey recorded 26,597 new cases on Tuesday, close to last week’s three-month high, and the number of fatalities hovered close to a two-month peak.

MEDICAL DEVELOPMENTS

The US National Institutes of Health said it had launched a new study to assess how patients on immunosuppressive therapy after kidney transplant, who did not respond to the first two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, respond to a third dose.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

Global stock markets strengthened on Tuesday, hovering close to record highs, while US Treasury yields rose to their highest levels since mid-July, spurred by Federal Reserve tapering talk.

Investor sentiment in Germany deteriorated for the third month in a row in August, a survey showed.

India smartphone market logs shipment of 34mn units in June qtr, says IDC


The April-June quarter started on a low note for the Indian smartphone market amid the second wave of COVID-19 but quickly recovered towards the end, clocking 86 per cent year-on-year growth to reach about 34 million units, research firm IDC said. The second wave of COVID-19 hit the country almost a year after the first wave but varied significantly in terms of market response.
