India records 36,571 new cases; Sydney extends lockdown

Coronavirus updates: India recorded 36,571 new Covid-19 cases and 559 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking its tally to 32,358,829 and the death toll to 433,589. Kerala reported 21,116 new infections, Maharashtra 5,225, followed by Andhra Pradesh (1,501), Tamil Nadu (1,702), Karnataka (1,432), West Bengal (547) and Delhi (25).

Meanwhile, according to an RTI response filed by the Covid-19 Vaccine Administration Cell of the Union Health Ministry, the data on CoWin portal, as of August 17, shows that the “total number of beneficiaries who got their first dose of Covishield Vaccine but did not get their second dose within stipulated period of time” is 3,40,72,993. Similarly, the number stands at 46,78,406 for Covaxin beneficiaries.

World coronavirus update: Covid-19 is continuing to spread around the world, with 210,797,726 confirmed cases and 4,416,228 deaths across nearly 200 countries recorded since China reported its first cases in December 2019. 'Bracing for the worst' in Florida's Covid-19 hot zone

As quickly as one Covid patient is discharged, another waits for a bed in northeast Florida, the hot zone of the state's latest surge. But the patients at Baptist Health's five hospitals across Jacksonville are younger and getting sick from the virus faster than people did last summer.

Baptist has over 500 Covid patients, more than twice the number they had at the peak of Florida's July 2020 surge, and the onslaught isn't letting up. Hospital officials are anxiously monitoring 10 forecast models, converting empty spaces, adding over 100 beds and bracing for the worst, said Dr. Timothy Groover, the hospitals' interim chief medical officer.

Jacksonville is kind of the epicenter of this. They had one of the lowest vaccination rates going into July and that has probably really came back to bite them, said Justin Senior, CEO of the Florida Safety Net Hospital Alliance, which represents some of the largest hospitals in the state.

Duval County, which consists almost entirely of Jacksonville, is a racially diverse Democratic bastion, won by Joe Biden. The overwhelmingly white rural counties that surround it went firmly for Donald Trump.

Covid hotspot India throws up world-beating stocks aided by easy money

The Reserve Bank of India is helping to fan a world-beating share market rally with record-low interest rates and huge injections of liquidity--even as inflation threatens to break back out of its target range.

Investors are betting the easy money won’t end anytime soon, with central bank Governor Shaktikanta Das keeping a lid on dissent as he nurses the economy back from its pandemic lows.

Overseas funds have poured $7.2 trillion into the nation’s equities this year and net inflows are expected to continue. The market for initial public offerings is on a tear, thanks to a frenzy of interest in startups, and India looks set to attract investors who’ve been scared off by China’s regulatory crackdown

Q1 results: Second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, higher costs take a toll

The quarter ended June 2021 was a disappointment for many sectors as hopes of a demand recovery seen in the January-March period were dashed by the second wave of Covid-19. Moreover, sharp surge in prices of commodities such as steel and energy hurt margins of companies across sectors, including automobile, FMCG and consumer goods, capital goods and infrastructure, among others, compared to the previous quarter. The comparison with the year-ago period is less meaningful, given the stringent lockdowns last year.

Rising commodity prices, however, meant gains for producers of metals, which have benefited from continuous rise in global prices on improving prospects in major world economies. Likewise, increased global demand for digital services benefited the country’s IT services companies. Here’s an insight into the June quarter performance of some of India’s key sectors and companies therein

A British public health study has found that protection from either of the two most commonly used Covid-19 vaccines against the now prevalent Delta variant of the coronavirus weakens within three months.

It also found that those who get infected after receiving two shots of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or the AstraZeneca vaccine may be of greater risk to others than under previous variants of the coronavirus. Based on more than three million nose and throat swabs taken across Britain, the Oxford University study found that 90 days after a second shot of the Pfizer or Astrazeneca vaccine, their efficacy in preventing infections had slipped to 75 per cent and 61 per cent respectively.

That was down from 85 per cent and 68 per cent, respectively, seen two weeks after a second dose

Markets gripped by anxiety over Covid-19 pandemic, Fed's tapering

Iron ore, luxury stocks and the dollar are all sending the same message across markets: investors are getting uneasy.

That anxiety was on display on Thursday as global markets shuddered in the wake of concerns stretching from China’s economy, Covid and the tapering of Federal Reserve stimulus. While the pain was sharpest in commodities and cyclicals, even defensive tech stocks slumped.

“What if the Fed can’t taper, let alone hike? This market is wedded to the narrative,” said Kit Juckes, chief foreign-exchange strategist at Societe Generale SA in London

Coronavirus update: Existing drugs kill SARS-CoV2 in cells, claims study

Since the beginning of the pandemic, researchers worldwide have been looking for ways to treat Covid-19. While the Covid-19 vaccines represent the best measure to prevent the disease, therapies for those who do get infected remain in short supply.

A new groundbreaking study from the University of Michigan (U-M) reveals several drug contenders already in use for other purposes--including one dietary supplement--that have been shown to block or reduce SARS-CoV2 infection in cells.

The study, published recently in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, uses artificial intelligence-powered image analysis of human cell lines during infection with the novel coronavirus.
