Vaccine clinical trials set to begin in Queensland
The University of the Sunshine Coast says it's planning to begin clinical trials on a potential new COVID-19 vaccine, produced by American company Icosavax.

USC Clinical Trials Director Lucas Litewka said in a statement that the "need for new and continuing research into potential COVID-19 vaccines was fundamental to improving our pandemic response and preparedness".

“We hope to build upon our experience in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials to partner on this new and innovative vaccine technology,” the statement read.

The next step will be getting participants for the trial — we're expecting to hear more about this research in the coming days and weeks.

New Zealand sticking with elimination strategy
As we heard earlier, New Zealand's nationwide lockdown is here to stay until at least Friday as authorities try and get a handle on the outbreak of Delta cases there.

PM Jacinda Ardern says it's important for New Zealand to maintain its COVID-19 elimination strategy for now.

"That's the way that we have managed to have a larger number of days when we have been without restrictions … and not had our people gravely ill, hospitalised and losing their lives.

"It means getting those cases back down to a point where we can remove our restrictions again and importantly continue with our vaccination program."

But with elimination the goal, authorities warned cases would "get worse before they get better".

Known contacts have been identified right across New Zealand, including throughout the South Island, and there are now 13,230 individual contacts identified in the outbreak, with the majority being considered close contacts by the Health Ministry.

New lockdown being enforced in Vietnam
Soldiers have been deployed on the streets of Vietnam's biggest city to enforce strict new lockdown rules.

Ho Chi Minh City has become the epicentre of Vietnam's worst coronavirus outbreak since the pandemic began.

There have been 176,000 cases and more than 6,000 deaths, with most over the past four months.

New lockdown rules began today, banning people from leaving their homes, with residents told to "stay put" and "stay in".

Soldiers have been deployed to neighbourhoods to check people are complying and to deliver food — panic buying broke out over the weekend at supermarkets, with long queues to get supplies.

A man who had recently been in New South Wales has been fined for not wearing a mask in Tasmania.

The freight and logistics worker had been granted an essential traveller exemption to enter Tasmania, but was caught without wearing a mask in public.

The man aged in his 60s from southern Tasmania was exempt from hotel quarantine due to the nature of his work, but had strict rules about when he could leave his residence and has been required to undergo regular COVID-19 testing.

He's been fined $1,557.
