U.S. to ship 4 million vaccine doses to Indonesia 'as soon as possible'

(Reuters) - The United States will ship 4 million doses of Moderna Inc's COVID-19 vaccine to Indonesia as it battles a coronavirus outbreak, the U.S. national security adviser told the Indonesian foreign minister on Friday.

In a call with Retno Marsudi, Jake Sullivan said the doses would be shipped via the COVAX global vaccine sharing program "as soon as possible," a White House statement said.

Sullivan said the donation "underscored the United States’ support for the people of Indonesia as they fight a surge in COVID-19 cases."

The two officials also discussed U.S. plans to increase assistance for Indonesia’s broader COVID-19 response efforts, the statement said.

"Sullivan highlighted the importance the Biden-Harris administration places on Indonesia, Southeast Asia and ending the pandemic more broadly and pledged continued support and high-level engagement," the statement said.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country and has been battling one of the Asia's worst coronavirus outbreaks. The nation has recorded record new infections on eight of the past 12 days, including 25,830 cases on Friday, and a record 539 deaths.

Indonesia has relied mainly on the vaccine from China's Sinovac Biotech, but has been looking to diversify supply sources.

Penny K. Lukito, the chief of Indonesia's food and drug agency, said earlier on Friday it authorized the Moderna vaccine for emergency use.

Washington has been competing with Beijing to deepen geopolitical clout through so-called vaccine diplomacy, although it has said it is not sharing vaccines to secure favors or extract concessions, but to save lives and end the pandemic.

The Biden administration pledged last month to share an initial 80 million U.S.-made vaccines globally amid concern about the disparity in vaccination rates between advanced and developing countries.

It has already announced plans to provide vaccines to other Southeast Asian countries - the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Papua New Guinea, and Cambodia.

It has also said it will purchase 500 million Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines to distribute to the African Union and 92 low and lower middle-income countries.

Covid-19 global updates: India’s death toll tops 400,000 as delta variant gains ground worldwide
India’s official coronavirus death toll surpassed 400,000 on Friday, as the nation continued to grapple with the fallout of a devastating spring surge in cases, an outbreak that was driven in part by the more contagious delta variant now gaining ground in the United States and around the world.

At least 400,312 people have died of the virus in India since the pandemic began, the government <https://twitter.com/COVIDNewsByMIB/status/1410825969250750465> said, out of more than 30 million confirmed infections. Experts believe both figures are vast undercounts, as record numbers of patients and deaths overwhelmed the country’s health-care system.

While the outbreak appears to have peaked in India — with 853 deaths recorded over the past 24 hours — the more virulent variant that spurred its spring wave is now seeding new virus clusters from Moscow to Jakarta to rural Missouri.

Here are some significant developments:

*	The Seychelles, one of the world’s most vaccinated nations, said that six fully inoculated people have died of the virus. Five had received an Indian-made version of the Oxford-AstraZeneca shot, while one was administered Sinopharm shots.
*	Indonesia recorded a record number of cases (24,836) and deaths (504) on Thursday. Local leaders warned that hospital capacity was under severe stress. The country has now placed two highly populous areas under lockdown.
*	Portugal reimposed a nighttime curfew on several “high-risk” cities including Lisbon and Porto. The country reported over 2,400 new cases on Thursday, many of which were among unvaccinated young people.
*	Facing outbreaks of the contagious delta variant and a floundering vaccination campaign, Australia moved Friday to further seal itself off from the world <https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-02/national-cabinet-scott-morrison-vaccine-targets-astrazeneca/100261886> as its earlier success in tackling the coronavirus continued to unravel.
*	South Korea reported 826 new infections on Friday — its highest daily caseload in almost a half-year. After an exponential increase in vaccinations through mid-June, the pace has started slowing. Seoul recently relaxed a mask mandate for partially inoculated people.

The delta variant, first detected in India, has caused steep spikes in new cases even in nations with high vaccination rates such as Britain and Israel, which on Thursday recorded its highest daily infection rate in three months, the Associated Press reported.

On Friday, England’s public health authority said that new delta cases had risen 46 percent over the past week, with the variant accounting for about 95 percent of infections across Britain. Officials in both Britain and Israel, however, have credited the vaccines — including those developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech — with weakening the link between infections and deaths.

“Although cases are rising, we are not seeing a proportional rise in the number of people who are being admitted to hospital,” Jenny Harries, chief executive of Britain’s Health Security Agency, said in a statement Friday.

Johnson & Johnson said Thursday that its one-shot coronavirus vaccine showed effective protection against the delta variant in a small study, offering hope to many developing countries now facing summer outbreaks. The company signed an agreement in May to sell 200 million vaccine doses to the United Nations-backed Covax initiative, which seeks the equitable distribution of coronavirus vaccines worldwide.

Studies suggest that all three U.S.-approved vaccines work well against the delta variant, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday is also on track to become dominant in the United States in the coming weeks.

According to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, who spoke at a White House briefing Thursday, the delta variant now accounts for nearly 50 percent of new infections in parts of the United States, including in what she described as “vulnerable” regions where inoculation rates are low.

Manitoba reports 145 new COVID-19 cases, 7 deaths since Wednesday

Manitoba is reporting 145 new COVID-19 cases over the past two days — 54 Friday and 91 on Canada Day.

Health officials are also reporting seven deaths over the two-day span.

Friday’s new cases include 23 in the Winnipeg health region, 11 in the Southern health region, six in the Prairie Mountain health region, five in the in the Northern health region, and nine in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

There was no update on COVID-19 numbers in Manitoba on Thursday due to the holiday.

Health officials reported 70 new cases Wednesday and two deaths.

The five-day test-positivity rate dropped again Friday and stands at 5.4 per cent provincially and 4.8 per cent in Winnipeg.

Hospitalization rates also continue to drop. As of Friday morning officials say there were 163 Manitobans hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 173 Wednesday.VID-19 vaccine walk-ins for youth to begin at Leila supersite Wednesday

Of those in hospital as a result of the virus, 49 are in ICU, including six receiving critical care in Ontario.

Since March 2020, Manitoba has reported 56,306 cases of COVID-19 and 1,147 deaths have been connected to the virus. There are currently 1,098 active COVID-19 cases across the province.

Officials said Friday a previously announced death, a man in his 30s from the Interlake-Eastern health region reported June 30, has been removed from the case totals due to a data correction.

Earlier this week the province said it’s planning on changing the schedule for COVID-19 updates through the summer.

Starting Saturday, daily media bulletins with updated numbers will be sent out Monday through Friday, instead of seven days a week.

Vaccine media bulletins will be sent out on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Live media briefings with the chief provincial public health officer or the deputy chief provincial public health officer will be scheduled on Mondays going forward, and live updates will be held with the vaccine implementation task force on Wednesdays.

Online dashboards with case and vaccination numbers will continue to be updated daily, officials said.
