48 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba Saturday, test-positivity rate up slightly
Manitoba added 48 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, while the test-positivity rate ticked up slightly, according to the province’s COVID-19 dashboard.

Due to an improving COVID situation and climbing vaccination rates, the province previously said it would no longer be sending out bulletins on weekends, so specific data is limited.

The dashboard shows an overall death toll of 1,148, which is one more than Friday.

It also says 31 new cases are in Winnipeg, eight are in Prairie Mountain Health, four are in Southern Health-Santé Sud, and five are in the Northern health region.

There are 1,008 active cases of the virus in Manitoba, while 54,197 individuals are listed as recovered.

The province’s test-positivity rate is sitting at 5.7 per cent, up slightly from 5.4 per cent on Friday.

There are 61 Manitobans in hospital with active COVID-19 infections and 152 total hospitalizations with the virus. As well, there are 17 active COVID-19 infections in intensive care units (ICUs) and 41 total COVID-19 ICU patients.

Global COVID-19 cases top 183.4mn

The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 183.4 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.96 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Sunday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 183,404,186 and 3,969,635, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 33,713,729 and 605,493, respectively, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 30,502,362 cases.

The other worst countries with over 3 million cases are Brazil (18,742,025), France (5,845,622), Russia (5,519,516), Turkey (5,440,368), the UK (4,896,272), Argentina (4,526,473), Colombia (4,324,230), Italy (4,262,511), Spain (3,833,868), Germany (3,738,059) and Iran (3,241,037), the CSSE figures showed.

In terms of deaths, Brazil comes second with 523,587 fatalities.

Nations with a death toll of over 100,000 are India (401,050), Mexico (233,580), Peru (192,687), Russia (134,987), the UK (128,471), Italy (127,637), France (111,314) and Colombia (108,314).

Cuba reports record 3,308 daily COVID-19 cases, 20 deaths
Cuba registered 3,308 new COVID-19 infections and 20 more deaths in the last 24 hours, both record numbers for one day, bringing the totals to 197,253 cases and 1,322 deaths, the Ministry of Public Health reported on Friday.

The province of Matanzas recorded 916 new infections in the last day and continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic, with an incidence rate of 809.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.

This week, the government adopted new measures in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases, including the strengthening of epidemiological monitoring and the implementation of more rigorous international health controls.

Cuban Health Minister Jose Angel Portal pointed out that the high rate of infection and the increase in the incidence rate in the last 15 days have been compounded by the circulation of highly contagious variants of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the ministry's emergency vaccination campaign against COVID-19 continues, as 6.13 million doses of Cuban vaccine candidates Abdala and Soberana-02 have been administered so far, with over 2.77 million Cubans receiving at least one dose.

S. Africa approves use of China's Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) on Saturday announced that it had authorized the use of the CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech.

The latest vaccine approval was based on the "safety, quality and efficacy data" submitted to the regulator between March 22 and June 22, it said in a statement.

"The authorisation is subject to a number of conditions. Specifically, the applicant is required to submit the final results of ongoing clinical studies," said the authority. "SAHPRA also took account of the World Health Organization Emergency Use Listing report on this vaccine."

"In addition, the conditions require the submission of periodic safety updates in accordance with SAHPRA guidance, and conformance with pharmacovigilance activities as outlined in the approved risk management plan," it said.

South Africa hits a new record with 26,000 daily COVID-19 cases

(Reuters) - South Africa hit a record of 26,000 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, its second record-breaking tally in as many days, as a rampant third wave of infections coursed through a largely unvaccinated population.

The rampant rise in infections in Africa's most industrialised nation has stretched health services to breaking point, with hospitals out of beds and medics to man them, and forced the government to impose partial lockdown restrictions.

South Africa has recorded over 2 million cases and 61,500 deaths so far during the pandemic, the data from the Department of Health showed, while 3.3 million people have been vaccinated -- about 5% of the population.

The low vaccination rate has resulted from a mixture of bad luck and bureaucratic failures. The government had to destroy 2 million contaminated Johnson & Johnson <https://www.reuters.com/companies/JNJ.N> (JNJ.N) vaccine doses earlier this year, while efforts to replace them have run up against global supply bottlenecks.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticised what he called global "vaccine apartheid," with rich countries with plentiful vaccine supplies hoarding them while poorer countries wait.

To tackle this problem, South Africa on Saturday approved China's Sinovac vaccine against COVID-19, as growing evidence emerges of its effectiveness.
