Coronavirus Updates: The active cases have declined to 4,30,422, comprising 1.39 per cent of total infections in the country.


India reported on Friday 38,949 new cases of COVID-19 and 542 more fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking its total tally to 3,10,26,829 cases and 4,12,531 deaths, according to a health ministry release.

The active cases have declined to 4,30,422, comprising 1.39 per cent of total infections. India's COVID-19 recovery rate now stands at 97.28 per cent. The number of people who've recovered from the disease stands at 3,01,83,876. India has so far administered 39.53 crore vaccine doses under the nationwide inoculation drive against COVID-19, according to the Centre.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Thursday that "more dangerous" variants of  <https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/maharashtra-reports-8-010-new-covid-cases-170-deaths-7-391-recoveries-2487576> Covid-19 could tear across the world as global infections soared to half a million daily, largely driven by the virulent Delta strain. The Supreme Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to reconsider Kanwar Yatra after the Centre said the states must not allow the movement of devotees undertaking the 'Kanwar yatra' due to the pandemic situation. COVID-19 India News: Centre Files Affidavit In Top Court Against Movement Of Kanwariyas
Centre has filed an affidavit in Supreme Court stating that state governments must not permit the movement of Kanwariyas for bringing 'Ganga Jal' from Haridwar in view of COVID-19. reported news agency ANI. However, considering religious sentiments, the state governments must develop a system to make 'Ganga Jal' available via tankers at designated locations, Centre said.

The Centre told the Supreme Court that state governments must ensure that distribution of 'Ganga Jal' among devotees and rituals by such devotees in the nearby Shiva temples must take place while ensuring social distancing, wearing masks and adhering to all steps required during the COVID-19 crisis.
India today added 38,949 new cases, 6.8 per cent lower than yesterday, taking the Covid caseload to 3.09 crore. 542 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. 

 

COVID-19 India News: Caseload Rises By 435, Death Count By 7 In Maharashtra' Thane
The COVID-19 infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra grew by 435 to 5,39,395, an official said on Friday, reported news agency PTI. These cases were reported on Thursday, he said. With the virus claiming the lives of seven persons, the death count in the district rose to 10,880. Thane's COVID-19 mortality rate is 2.01% at present, he added. In Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,18,710, while death count is 2,657, another official said.

Coronavirus Live Updates: Australia races to stem COVID-19 outbreaks in Sydney, Melbourne
Australian officials urged people to obey lockdown measures that cover around 40% of the country's population as an outbreak of the highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant again picked up pace on Friday.

Daily new infections in New South Wales, where the outbreak began about a month ago, rose after a dip a day earlier, while new cases across the border in Victoria remained steady.

Total infections since the first was detected in mid-June, in a Sydney limousine driver transporting overseas airline crews, now stand at more than 1,000.

Despite Sydney heading into its fourth week of lockdown, New South Wales officials recorded 97 new locally acquired cases, up from 65 on Thursday.

Maharashtra's coronavirus caseload rose to 61,89,257 with the addition of 8,010 new infections on Thursday, while the death count jumped to 1,26,560 after 170 patients died due to the respiratory illness, a health department official said.

 

Saudi Smashes Fraud COVID-19 Testing, Vaccination Ring Ahead Of Hajj
Saudi Arabia has arrested more than 120 people suspected of supplying or procuring fraudulent coronavirus vaccine and test certificates, official media said Thursday, two days before a tightly controlled hajj.

The state-run SPA news agency said nine health ministry officials are among the accused, who have all pleaded guilty.

Some 60,000 Saudi residents with vaccine certificates will join this year's religious pilgrimage, the second time the gathering has been massively curtailed because of the pandemic.



"Strong Likelihood" Of More Dangerous COVID-19 Variants: WHO Experts Warn
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Thursday that "more dangerous" variants of Covid-19 could tear across the world as global infections soared to half a million daily, largely driven by the virulent Delta strain.

An AFP tally of official sources found that after an initial dip, cases have been rising again worldwide since the end of June, topping 540,000 on Tuesday and again on Wednesday.

"The pandemic is nowhere near finished," the WHO's emergency committee said in a statement.

It highlighted "the strong likelihood for the emergence and global spread of new and possibly more dangerous variants of concern that may be even more challenging to control".

Maharashtra gives RT-PCR test report exemption to travellers having 15-day gap from 2nd COVID-19 dose
The Maharashtra government has exempted those people who have got both the doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from carrying a negative RT-PCR test report for entering the state, although there has to be a gap of at least 15 days between the second dose and the date of arrival. An order to this effect was issued late night on Thursday by state chief secretary Sitaram Kunte. ‘A person entering the state should be vaccinated with both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and 15 days should be lapsed since the administration of the second dose. That person should be in possession of the final vaccination certificate issued through the COWIN portal,’ the order said. "Such persons will be exempted from mandatory requirement of possessing a negative RT-PCR report on their entry into the state," it said. – PTI

2 new COVID-19 cases in Andamans
The union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported only two new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the tally to 7,501, a health department official said on Friday. The two cases were detected during contact tracing, the official said. The COVID-19 death toll in the archipelago remained at 129 as no fresh fatality due to the contagion was reported in the last 24 hours, the official said. – PTI



Nashik adds 162 COVID-19 cases; six die
The COVID-19 tally in Nashik district of Maharashtra rose to 3,96,878 with the single-day addition of 162 cases, health officials have said. These cases were added on Thursday. The virus claimed the lives of six patients during the day, which pushed the death toll in the district to 8,450, they said. A total of 157 patients were discharged from hospitals on Thursday, taking the recovery count of the district to 3,86,767. With 9,128 samples getting tested during the day, the overall test count has now reached 21,14,268, the officials said. – PTI



Fully vaccinated Americans may enter Canada as of mid-August
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday Canada could start allowing fully vaccinated Americans into Canada as of mid-August for non-essential travel and should be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travellers from all countries by early September. Trudeau spoke with leaders of Canada's provinces and his office released a readout of the call. He noted that if Canada's current positive path of vaccination rate and public health conditions continue the border can open. – AP

An American journalist detained in Myanmar told his lawyer he believes he has COVID-19, but prison authorities deny he is infected. Danny Fenster was detained at Yangon International Airport on May 24 as he was trying to board a flight to go to the Detroit area in the United States to see his family. He is the managing editor of Frontier Myanmar, an independent online news outlet based in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city. Fenster has been charged with incitement for which he could be sentenced to up to three years' imprisonment. Philippines detects first local transmission of Delta variant
The Philippines has recorded the country's first locally transmitted cases of the more infectious Delta coronavirus variant, the health ministry said on Friday, with one person dying from the disease.Of the 16 new COVID-19 cases found to have contracted the Delta variant, 11 were tagged as locally acquired cases, health undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told a news conference.One person had died after being rushed to a hospital in the capital Manila on June 28, Vergeire said.Five of those who tested positive were Filipinos returning from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the United Kingdom.Philippine authorities have been scrambling to try and stop the variant from spreading in the community after it has triggered an upsurge in infections across the region. – Reuters



Abu Dhabi announces sudden overnight lockdown
The capital of the United Arab Emirates has announced a sudden overnight lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic, even as the rest of the country remains open for tourism. The state-run WAM news agency announced late Thursday the lockdown would begin Monday and last each day from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. It comes just ahead of the long Eid al-Adha holidays in the UAE, which begins Monday as well. Abu Dhabi's Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee euphemistically described the lockdown as being part of - the National Sterilization Program. The UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, used the same term during lockdowns in 2020 amid the start of the pandemic. -  AP

Chilean Sinovac trial leaders recommend third dose of COVID-19 vaccine
The leaders of a Chilean late-stage human trial of the CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccine developed by China's Sinovac on Thursday recommended a third dose of the jab to protect against the more contagious Delta variant.The trial leaders said a separate in vitro laboratory trial to determine the vaccine's effectiveness against the Delta strain of the virus showed that neutralizing antibodies reduced four-fold compared to those produced against the original coronavirus strain first found in China.Chinese scientists have previously reported a smaller three-fold reduction. – Reuters

US President Joe Biden said on Thursday the United States is prepared to send vaccines to Cuba if it is assured an international organization would administer them but he is not considering easing U.S. policy around sending remittances to the country. Thousands of Cubans on Sunday staged the biggest anti-government protests in decades to demonstrate against an economic crisis that has seen shortages of basic goods and power outages. China reports 36 new coronavirus cases on July 15 vs 28 a day earlier
China reported 36 new confirmed coronavirus cases in the mainland on July 15, compared with 28 a day earlier, the country's health authority said on Friday.All of the new cases were imported, meaning that there were no new local transmissions, data from the National Health Commission showed.China also reported 23 new asymptomatic coronavirus cases in the mainland, compared with 8 a day earlier. China does not classify asymptomatic infections as confirmed cases.The total accumulated number of confirmed cases in mainland China now stands at 92,183, with total deaths unchanged at 4,636. – Reuters



Thailand reports daily record of coronavirus infections

Slovakia thanks Taiwan for masks with pledge of 10,000 vaccine doses
Taiwan has garnered another donation of COVID-19 vaccines, this time from Slovakia, which has pledged 10,000 doses in what the central European country said was a show of support after a Taiwanese gift of face masks to Slovakia last year.Under the slogan "Taiwan can help, Taiwan is helping", the island has since the pandemic began donated millions of face masks around the world, including to the United States, Asia and European countries, with 700,000 going to Slovakia.Since a spike in domestic cases began in Taiwan in May, the government has received almost six million vaccine doses gifted by Japan and the United States, while Lithuania has said it will donate 20,000 doses.In a statement on its Facebook page on Friday, the de facto Slovak embassy in Taiwan said the country would be giving Taiwan 10,000 vaccine doses. – Reuters



US Surgeon General says he lost 10 family members to Covid
US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy, an Indian-American, on Thursday said he lost as many as 10 family members both here and in India to the COVID-19 pandemic. Murthy, who is occupying the position for the second time, said this at a White House briefing making a strong case for people to get vaccinated to protect themselves from the deadly virus. ‘On a personal note, it's painful for me to know that nearly every death we are seeing now from COVID-19 could have been prevented. I say that as someone who has lost 10 family members to COVID-19 and who wishes each and every day that they had had the opportunity to get vaccinated,’ Murthy said. – PTI



WHO chief says it was 'premature' to rule out COVID lab leak
The head of the World Health Organisation acknowledged it was premature to rule out a potential link between the COVID-19 pandemic and a laboratory leak, and he said Thursday he is asking China to be more transparent as scientists search for the origins of the coronavirus. In a rare departure from his usual deference to powerful member countries, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said getting access to raw data had been a challenge for the international team that traveled to China earlier this year to investigate the source of COVID-19. The first human cases were identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
