86.25% new COVID cases in 6 states: Govt
Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are the six states that cumulatively account for 86.25 per cent of the new coronavirus cases reported in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Monday.
Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 11,141, followed by Kerala with 2,100 and Punjab with 1,043 new infections, the ministry said.
The Centre is regularly holding high-level review meetings with the states and Union territories showing a surge in new daily cases and the health secretary is also holding weekly review meetings, it said.
BJP's central observers submit report to party high command over Uttarakhand crisis
Puducherry logged 14 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours taking the overall tally in the union territory to 39,882, a top Health department official said on Monday.
No fresh fatality was reported from any of the four regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam and the fatalities remained at 670, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said.
The 14 new cases were identified at the end of the examination of 409 samples, he added.
Reopening schools national effort to beat Covid: UK PM
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the reopening of schools in England as a "national effort" to beat coronavirus, even though some experts warned that the country is still not "out of the woods". On Februay 22, Johnson had announced his long-anticipated "roadmap" exiting the lockdown, under which schools in England are scheduled to reopen from Monday as first part of the four-step plan, Xinhua news agency reported. According to the Prime Minister, the plan was designed to be "cautious but irreversible". Under the guidance, secondary schools students across England are to receive three Covid-19 lateral-flow tests before using at-home kits twice a week.
622 new Covid cases in K'taka, 351 recover
Continuing the rising trend, 622 new Covid cases were registered in a day across Karnataka, even as 351 patients recovered from the infection, said the state health bulletin on Sunday. "With 622 new cases on Saturday, the state's Covid tally rose to 9,55,015, including 6,862 active cases, while recoveries increased to 9,35,772, with 351 discharged during the day," said the daily bulletin. Only 3 patients succumbed to the infection in Bengaluru Urban district, taking the city's death toll to 4,499 and the state's toll to 12,362.

Telangana adds 111 fresh COVID-19 cases, overall tally crosses three lakh mark
Telangana recorded 111 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to over three lakh cases while the death toll rose to 1,642 with one more fatality, the state government said on Monday. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 27, followed by Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri districts with 10 and nine respectively, it said in a bulletin, providing details as of 8 PM on March 7. While the overall tally rose to 3,00,011 with 111 fresh infections, the cumulative recovered cases stood at 2,96,562 and 1,807 were under treatment.
Maharashtra: 780 new COVID-19 cases in Thane, 3 more deaths
Thane has added780 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 2,69,845,an official said on Monday. These new cases were reported on Sunday, he said. The virus also claimed the lives of three more people, pushing the death toll in the district to 6,302, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in the district is 2.34 per cent, he said.
Some 140k in London suffer long Covid symptoms
bout 140,000 residents in London have suffered from Covid-19 symptoms after contracting the disease amid warning of healthcare "gaps" that could leave them struggling to get support, a media report said. It came in a letter from the London Assembly to Mayor Sadiq Khan seeking assurances that the British capital's health system has the capacity to cope with the long-term consequences of the pandemic, Xinhua news agency quoted the Evening Standard newspaper report as saying on Sunday. About one in five people who have contracted Covid-19 suffer symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness and "brain fog" for 12 weeks or more, according to the London-based newspaper.
Global Covid-19 caseload tops 116.8 mn
The total number of global Covid-19 cases has topped 116.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.59 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University. In its latest update on Monday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 116,817,145 and 2,592,768, respectively. The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 28,991,537 and 524,987, respectively, according to the CSSE.
Punjab chief secretary holds meeting with experts to tackle second wave of COVID-19
Medical Education, and School Education, reviewed and discussed with experts the possible steps to effectively tackle the spread during the second wave, according to a press release. Central Government's Joint Secretary Dr Mandeep Bhandari, who had recently visited Punjab as head of the Central team along with Dr Lakshmi from PGIMER, shared their observations that the COVID spread in Punjab is not just specific to schools alone as other places are also affected and the primary reason for the surge in cases in the State is because people are not following COVID Appropriate Behaviors and not religiously abiding the COVID safety protocols. The state Principal Secretary (Medical Education) DK Tewari informed that in Medical Colleges, students are getting tested every 15 days and no positivity has been found yet.
France logs nearly 22,000 new Covid-19 cases
France reported 21,825 new Covid-19 cases in a 24-hour span, down from Saturday's 23,306, while the surging number of hospitalized patients indicated mounting pressure on the country's health system. The cumulative number of coronavirus cases in France now stands at 3,904,233, and the total number of fatalities at 88,574, up by 130 in the past 24 hours, according to data posted on the government's website on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported. The number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients went up again after falling for the previous five days. In the past 24 hours, another 193 people were admitted to the hospital, raising the total of hospitalizations to 24,818. That included 3,743 in intensive care, the highest level since the end of November 2020.
Russia logs 10,595 new Covid-19 cases
Russia registered 10,595 more Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, down from 11,022 a day earlier, the country's COVID-19 response centre said. The national tally has thus increased to 4,322,776 with 89,094 deaths and 3,911,924 recoveries, the centre said on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported. Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 1,534 new cases, taking its total to 990,395. Nearly 113.3 million Covid-19 tests have been conducted across the country
Israel's Covid-19 cases surpass 800,000
The total number of Covid-19 cases in Israel reached 800,721 with 994 new cases added since Saturday evening, the Ministry of Health said. The death toll from the Covid-19 in Israel reached 5,861 on Sunday, while the number of patients in serious condition stands at 724, out of 1,155 hospitalized patients, Xinhua news agency reported. The total recoveries rose to 754,210, while the active cases stand at 40,650. According to the Ministry, the number of people vaccinated against the Covid-19 in Israel is nearly 4.93 million, or 53 per cent of its total population, since the vaccination campaign began on December 20, 2020.
UP DGP writes to state police department seeking data of cops who died of Covid
Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Hitesh Chandra Awasthi has expressed displeasure for not receiving information about the exact number of policemen who had succumbed to the coronavirus pandemic in the state. In a letter to all the UP superintendents of police and police commissioners, Awasthi said, "It seems that the district in-charges are not taking any personal interest in the matter, due to which the families of the deceased policemen are not getting the funds." "Strict action will be taken if there will be any variation in the information," he added.
Moderna reaches supply deal with Philippines for 13 million vaccine doses
(Reuters) - Moderna Inc said on Saturday it has agreed to supply the Philippines government with 13 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine, with deliveries set to begin in mid-2021.
The company will work with regulators to pursue necessary approvals before distribution, it said in a press release.
Moderna said it expected to reach a separate deal with the Philippines government and private sector to supply an additional 7 million doses.
The deal will boost the supply of COVID-19 vaccines in the Philippines, which on March 1 began its campaign to inoculate 70 million of its 108 million people to achieve herd immunity and reopen an economy that in 2020 saw its worst contraction on record.
The Philippines, which is battling one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in Asia, reported 3,276 confirmed cases on Sunday, the third straight day that the daily figure has remained above 3,000 or levels last seen in October.
Its food and drug regulator has so far approved for emergency use COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE, AstraZeneca PLC and Sinovac Biotech.
