Zimbabwe COVID19 Update

COVID-19 update: As at 26 March 2021, Zimbabwe had 36 805 confirmed cases, including 34 572 recoveries and 1 518 deaths. To date, a total of 61 093 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Vaccine Check in Hong Kong; Worries in Australia: Virus Update
Hong Kong could see preliminary findings of <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-27/hong-kong-expects-initial-report-on-biontech-vaccine-next-week> an investigation into packaging defects of the BioNTech SE Covid-19 vaccine as early as next week after suspending inoculations, the South China Morning Post reported.

The Australian state of Queensland was seeking to halve the number of overseas arrivals after a new case raised worries of fresh clusters emerging. In China, state-backed Sinopharm said it has reached a milestone of supplying 100 million doses of its Covid vaccine globally.

The U.S. will have received <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/pfizer-moderna-j-j-on-track-for-vaccine-targets-official-says> 240 million doses of vaccine by the end of this month, enough to fully inoculate 130 million people, a senior White House aide said. Kansas, Minnesota and South Carolina will open vaccinations to all adults next week, the latest among about 40 states to say they would do so by President Joe Biden’s May 1 goal.

No New Local Cases in Hong Kong
Hong Kong <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQM7INDWX2Q3> reported six new imported cases as of midnight, the government said in a statement. It was the first time in more than four months there were no new locally transmitted cases in the daily tally, Radio Television Hong Kong said in a report on its website.

Facebook Halts Venezuela President Page
Facebook has <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQM2N3DWRGG3> frozen Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s page for violating policies on misinformation over a remedy he claims will cure coronavirus, Reuters reported, citing a spokesman from the social media company.

A video in which Maduro promotes a medication called Carvativir, an oral solution derived from thyme, was taken down by Facebook. Due to repeated violations, Facebook also decided to freeze Maduro’s page for 30 days during which it will be read-only, the company spokesman told the news agency.

Hong Kong Report on BioNTech Vaccine
Hong Kong expects preliminary findings of <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-27/hong-kong-expects-initial-report-on-biontech-vaccine-next-week> an investigation into packaging defects of the BioNTech SE Covid-19 vaccine as early as next week, the South China Morning Post reported on Saturday, citing a senior official.

The government began to administer immunizations on March 6, with recipients set to take the booster shot after 21 days. Hong Kong and Macau suspended use of the vaccine on Wednesday, as BioNTech and regional distributor Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group Co. began a probe into tilted or loose vial caps and minor stains on a small number of bottles.

Sinopharm Supplies 100 Million Doses
China’s Sinopharm said it has <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQLW21T1UM0Z> supplied a total of 100 million doses of its vaccine globally, which have been used to inoculate people in 50 nations and regions. The company said on its official WeChat account that its expects its annual capacity to reach 1 billion doses in 2021 and eventually reach 3 billion.

Australia’s Queensland Seeks Limits
Australia’s Queensland state reported one new locally transmitted case of the virus Saturday. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told <https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-27/queensland-coronavirus-saturday-premier-annastacia-palaszczuk/13278432> reporters that she has asked Prime Minister Scott Morrison to halve the state’s overseas arrivals for the next two weeks amid concern of high positive rates among returned travelers. Queensland currently takes 1,300 international arrivals weekly.

Brazil Breaks Record for Fatalities
Brazil reported 3,650 new deaths, breaking a record for fatalities for the second day this week as the <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-24/brazil-blows-past-300-000-covid-deaths-with-no-respite-in-sight> nation’s outbreak continues to worsen. A record was set for new cases on Thursday, when more than 100,000 daily infections were reported. Occupancy of intensive care beds in 17 of 27 states has risen above 90%.

The nation’s richest state Sao Paulo extended restrictions while tests in Sao Paulo city showed 71% of new cases are coming from new variants, local media reported.

Biden Asked to Ease Taiwan Travel
A group of nine lawmakers asked the Biden administration to establish a facility to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/republicans-ask-biden-administration-to-ease-travel-from-taiwan> expedite travel to the U.S. from Taiwan’s main international airport, a show of support for the island amid fears it could be targeted by an increasingly aggressive China.

The group of seven Republicans and two Democrats said in a letter dated March 25 that a pre-clearance facility at Taoyuan International Airport “would improve the ease of travel between the United States and Taiwan and reinforce the importance of our relationship with Taiwan.”

U.K. May Test Frontline Workers
The U.K. will provide supermarkets with millions of rapid home tests for <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/u-k-government-to-extend-rapid-covid-testing-to-grocery-workers> “frontline” store workers as it ramps up efforts to stop the spread of Covid-19, according to three people with knowledge of the situation.

The government is close to announcing a testing program through which supermarket employees would complete the assessments at home before turning up for their shifts, the people said, asking not to be identified as the matter is confidential. The proposal could come as soon as this weekend.

States Open Vaccines to All Adults
Kansas, Minnesota and South Carolina became the latest states to say they will open up vaccinations to all adults before President Joe Biden’s goal of May 1. About 40 states have either announced dates or are already administering vaccinations to all adults.

Kansas will begin Monday, Minnesota on Tuesday and South Carolina on Wednesday, their governors announced on Twitter. Eligibility for all three states is 16 years and older.

Sao Paulo Extends Emergency
Brazil’s Sao Paulo state will extend <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QQL7JYDWRGG2> coronavirus restrictions to April 11 from March 30 as the region continues to suffer from the pandemic, Deputy Governor Rodrigo Garcia said in a news conference. Essential services only will remain open.

Intensive care unit occupancy rates are at 91.6%, and people age 68 and older will be eligible for vaccinations on April 5.

WHO Concerned About Vaccine Crimes
The World Health Organization expressed <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-25/curbs-by-world-s-biggest-vaccine-exporter-to-hit-poorest-nations> concern over criminal groups exploiting unmet demand for vaccines amid reports about suspicious offers to supply shots. The WHO is also aware of vaccines being diverted and then reintroduced into the supply chain, without the guarantee that the cold chain has been maintained. Other reports include falsified products sold online, especially on the dark web, as well as the reuse of empty vials.

N.Y. Launches Digital Covid Pass
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of a digital pass with proof of a resident’s vaccination or negative Covid-19 test. Cuomo said the pass could be used for entry into stadiums and arenas, wedding receptions and other large events.

So-called <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-25/covid-vaccine-passports-2021-the-golden-ticket-for-international-travel> “vaccine passports” have been advocated by several nations and the ailing travel industry as a way to speed up reopening. They are also contentious, raising questions about fairness among rich countries with higher vaccination rates and poor ones.

Italy’s Population Plunges
Deaths outnumbered births in Italy last year by <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/italy-s-population-falls-most-in-over-100-years-in-2020> the most since 1918, the last year of World War I, according to Istat, the national statistics agency. The birth gap was 342,000, swollen by the impact of Covid-19 in the country that was Europe’s first epicenter of the disease.

Italy’s population shrank by 0.6% to some 59.3 million, with the north particularly decimated, Istat reported. Marriages fell by 47.5% in 2020. Almost 107,000 people have died of Covid-19 in Italy, which has Europe’s second-highest toll after the U.K.

Facebook to Start Reopening Offices
Facebook Inc. will start to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/facebook-to-start-reopening-silicon-valley-offices-in-may> reopen its Silicon Valley offices beginning in May, a signal the technology industry may return -- at least in part -- to the office after more than a year of working from home during the global pandemic.

Facebook will begin by opening Bay Area offices at just 10% capacity, and expects that its largest offices, including its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, won’t reach 50% capacity until early September.

Shot Production Hitting U.S. Goals
The U.S. will have received <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/pfizer-moderna-j-j-on-track-for-vaccine-targets-official-says> 240 million doses of vaccine by the end of this month, enough to fully inoculate 130 million people, with Pfizer Inc., Moderna Inc. and Johnson & Johnson all on pace to hit quarterly production targets, a senior White House aide said.

The administration expects at least 11 million doses from J&J next week, putting them on track to hit their mark of 20 million doses by the end of March, Jeff Zients, Covid-19 response coordinator for President Joe Biden, said Friday in a briefing. J&J’s vaccine is the most recently authorized of the three in the U.S. and its production is still scaling up.

Masks, Sanitizer Now Tax Write-offs
Face masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes can qualify as medical expenses for <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/masks-and-hand-sanitizer-are-tax-write-offs-the-irs-says> tax deductions or can be paid for with money from tax-advantaged health accounts, the Internal Revenue Service announced Friday.

Virus Came From Lab: Ex-CDC Chief
A former top U.S. health official says he thinks the coronavirus originated in a <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/former-cdc-chief-says-he-thinks-coronavirus-came-from-wuhan-lab> lab in Wuhan, China, and began spreading as early as September 2019.

Robert Redfield, who led the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, told CNN in a clip aired Friday that he thinks that scenario is more likely than any alternative, including that the virus erupted after transferring from animals to humans or in a live-animal market.

The most likely origin “was from a laboratory -- you know, escaped,” said Redfield, who served during former President Donald Trump’s administration. The World Health Organization is due to release a report on its origins this month, informed by a team of 17 international scientists.
