Singapore Cluster Grows; Seychelles Cases Easing: Virus Update

Singapore’s air-travel bubble with Hong Kong was facing further delays after virus cases in the local community <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QT1CQ6T0G1L0> rose to the highest since July because of a cluster at Changi Airport.

There were more than 300,000 new confirmed Covid-19 cases in India for the 22nd consecutive day and more than 4,000 confirmed deaths. Seychelles, which has vaccinated more than half of its population using Sinopharm and Astra shots, said a surge in cases of the disease was <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-13/seychelles-with-62-inoculation-rate-says-covid-cases-easing> easing.

A group of medical experts said children aged 12 to 15 <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-12/pfizer-closes-in-on-getting-covid-19-vaccine-to-young-teens> can safely take the vaccine made by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, opening an important new phase of the U.S. immunization effort.

While the number of active cases has risen to 2,739, from 2,486 on May 10, the seven-day rolling average of infections has fallen to 178 from 322 about a week ago, the health ministry said.

Singapore Cases at 10-Month High
Singapore’s virus cases in the local community rose to the highest since July last year as authorities found more infections from an existing cluster at Changi Airport, raising concerns that an air travel bubble with Hong Kong may get delayed again.

Of the 24 cases discovered, 17 were linked to a cluster at Changi Airport, the Health Ministry said. This brings the total number of cases linked to the aerodrome to 42.

Thousands Rush to Get Vaccinated after Taipei Outbreak
A rising number of Covid-19 infections is prompting thousands of members of the hesitant Taiwanese public to get vaccinated. A record 16,180 people received vaccinations Wednesday, with 36 confirmed cases since Tuesday. That outbreak prompted the government to reimpose restrictions on large gatherings for the first time since last summer, although it sees a <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QT0V1CDWRGGE> smaller chance of further raising the Covid-19 alert level, the Apple Daily reported, citing the health minister.

Tokyo <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QT17CSDWRGG0> reported 1,010 new cases Thursday, with the 7-day average climbing. Japan’s northern Hokkaido Prefecture is proceeding with “careful considerations” over whether to ask the central government to declare a state of emergency as virus infections soar, NHK reports. The capital Sapporo is expected to report a daily record of about 500 infections Thursday, national broadcaster NHK says, while there were a record 712 cases across the prefecture, FNN reported. The Olympic marathon is scheduled to be held in Sapporo.

India’s 22nd Day Above 300,000 Cases

CDC Approves Pfizer Shot for Young Teens
A group of medical experts said children ages 12 to 15 years old can <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-12/pfizer-closes-in-on-getting-covid-19-vaccine-to-young-teens> safely take the Covid-19 vaccine made by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, opening an important new phase of the U.S. immunization effort.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved 12-15 year olds taking the Covid-19 vaccine made by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, opening an important new phase of the U.S. immunization effort. That was after it was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration and a group of medical experts said it was <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-12/pfizer-closes-in-on-getting-covid-19-vaccine-to-young-teens> safe. Mixing Shots Triggers More Fatigue
Mixing doses of two leading Covid-19 vaccines increased patients’ side effects such as fatigue and headaches in early findings from a study that has yet to show how well such a cocktail defends against the virus.

People who got a first dose of AstraZeneca Plc’s shot followed by Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine four weeks later reported more short-lived side effects, most of them mild, researchers from the University of Oxford reported in The Lancet medical journal. That was also true when the order of the shots was switched.

That’s helping to vindicate the second-most distributed shot globally, which had been shrouded in controversy for months.
