Zimbabwe COVID19 Update

COVID-19 update: As at 25 May 2021, Zimbabwe had 38 706 confirmed cases, including 36 517 recoveries and 1 587 deaths. To date, a total of 639 553 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

U.K. Backtracks on Travel Curbs; EU Attacks Astra: Virus Update

The European Union attacked <https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/AZN:LN> AstraZeneca Plc’s vaccine supply “failure” and demanded an urgent order for millions more doses in the latest round of a bitter legal dispute over alleged broken promises by the drugmaker.

In the U.K., Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government was forced to backtrack over its attempt to restrict travel to coronavirus hotspots in England where the so-called Indian variant is spreading.

Hong Kong may donate vaccines to countries more in need of them as local demand for Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE’s shots ebbs. Taiwan blamed China’s intervention for a missed vaccine deal with the pharma partners.

U.K. Edges Closer to Herd Immunity
The U.K. is edging closer toward a highly immune population as its vaccination drive speeds up.

Almost 76% of English adults were estimated to have antibodies in the week beginning May 3, according to the Office of National Statistics. That’s a level of immunity broadly reflected across the U.K., with Scotland rating the lowest at 69%.

EU Demands AstraZeneca Court Order
The EU attacked AstraZeneca’s vaccine supply “failure” and demanded an urgent order for millions more doses in the latest round of a bitter legal dispute over alleged broken promises by the drugmaker.

At a hearing that kicked off on Wednesday, a Belgian court is weighing EU claims that there’s an emergency situation that merits an order for the drugmaker to deliver 20 million more shots than it has promised so far by the end of June. The same court will examine later this year whether Astra violated the terms of its contract.

U.K. Forced Into U-Turn Over Travel
Boris Johnson’s government was forced to backtrack over its attempt to restrict travel to coronavirus hotspots in England where the so-called Indian variant is spreading.

The U-turn came after ministers were accused of introducing “local lockdowns by the back door” with the new guidance against travel to eight areas in England, which was published without fanfare online late last week but didn’t reach the attention of local leaders for several days.

By late Tuesday that was downgraded to advice to “minimize travel in and out of affected areas.” The move followed a backlash from members of Parliament and local leaders over the unclear guidance, which led to the cancellation of public events and some people halting planned vacations.

Taiwan Says China Blocked Vaccine Deal
President Tsai Ing-wen said China’s intervention blocked Taiwan’s almost-done deal to get about 30 million doses of BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine.

Separately, the island plans to close places of worship and limit restaurants to take-out only, the latest efforts to contain its first real coronavirus outbreak. There is also a moratorium on wedding banquets and public memorial ceremonies for funerals. Violations of the mask mandate will be fined.

The number of confirmed local cases in Taiwan has more than quadrupled in the past two weeks. Officials confirmed 302 new cases Wednesday, bringing the overall total to 4,918.

Korea Lifts Mask Mandate Post Vaccination
South Korea, in its latest attempt to spur more people to get vaccinated, said it will exempt those who’ve been inoculated from wearing masks outdoors. Health authorities did not specify how those who had a jab would be identified when the exemption takes effect in July.

The move comes almost two weeks after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said that fully vaccinated people don’t have to wear their masks in most settings, including indoors or in large groups.

Melbourne Holds Off on Snap Lockdown
Melbourne officials declined to declare a snap lockdown in the city Wednesday, even as the cluster of cases there grew to 15, passing the number that triggered the last short-notice restrictions in February. Australia’s second-biggest city issued a mask mandate and restricted gatherings earlier this week.

Victoria state Acting Premier James Merlino didn’t rule out further restrictions, saying there was concern “about the number and also about the kind of exposure sites” involved in the small but growing cluster. Among those who’ve now tested positive, some had attended a football match over the weekend and visited a university and the regional city of Bendigo, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of Melbourne.

Vietnam Gets Australia Vaccines Funds
Australia will provide Vietnam with a A$40 million ($31 million) grant for vaccine purchases, according to a post on Vietnam’s government website. Vietnam has also asked for help obtaining the AstraZeneca vaccines manufactured in Australia.

Vietnamese Premier Pham Minh Chinh has called on the international community to help fund the nation’s vaccine purchases amid a record surge in domestic virus cases.

Tokyo May Seek Extension of Emergency
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is considering asking the central government to <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QTOPJ6T1UM0W> extend a coronavirus state of emergency in the capital that’s due to expire May 31, public broadcaster NHK reported, without saying where it got the information. Infections are dropping but officials are concerned about a resurgence if the emergency is lifted too soon, NHK said.

Most Mainers 12 and Over Have Had a Shot
Maine Governor Janet Mills said 70% of state residents age 12 and older have received one vaccine dose. Five other states -- Vermont, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut -- have also reached that milestone, she said in a <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QTOJVCMB2SJP> statement, citing CDC data.

British Columbia Plans Return to Normal
British Columbia, whose economy weathered the pandemic better than much of Canada, said it foresees a return to “normal life” as it announced plans to lift most restrictions by the fall.

The western province on Tuesday released a four-stage plan that could see offices fully reopened, sporting events and concerts allowed, and constraints on travel lifted by September.

U.S. Travel Rebound Quickens
The rebound in U.S. travel is <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-25/united-air-sees-turn-toward-profit-on-boost-from-leisure-travel> gaining steam, according to the country’s three biggest airlines. The pace of the recovery has been faster than expected, Delta Air Lines Inc. President Glen Hauenstein said Tuesday.

United Airlines Holdings Inc. predicted it would turn a profit before certain items next quarter, while American Airlines Group Inc. said corporate trips and long overseas flights -- the worst-hit segments during the pandemic -- are poised for improvement.
