led to a 27% rise in sales volumes compared to the same period last year

Cassava revenue up 70%

CASSAVA Smartech Limited's revenue for the quarter ended August 31, 2021
increased by over 70% compared to the same period the previous year driven
by growth in transaction activity. In a trading update for the quarter,
Cassava group company secretary, Charmaine Daniels revealed that its mobile
money business continued on a steady growth trajectory with revenues
increasing by 63% during the period under review in comparison with the same

Industry welcomes more trading hours

THE Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) has said the relaxation of
restrictions under the Covid-19 level 2 lockdown regulations will allow
business to sustain gains that had been achieved under the previous
measures. This comes as President Mnangagwa, in a State of the Nation
Address (SONA) on the Covid-19 pandemic response yesterday, reviewed the
lockdown to level 2, from level 4, allowing more time for business to

Farmers use farm feed to reduce cattle deaths

SHURUGWI small-holder farmers have adopted supplementary feeding as part of
drought mitigation response strategies to alleviate cattle deaths during dry
seasons. Shurugwi District, in the Midlands Province, is prone to dry spells
due to poor rainfall patterns, which negatively affect both cropping and

Tobacco merchants to nance woodlots

Tobacco merchants will, starting this year, be required to finance planting
of trees on 0,2 hectare woodlots, to be used in curing the crop, for every
hectare contracted in a move expected to reduce deforestation. Firewood is
the principal source of energy for curing tobacco, a major foreign currency
earner for Zimbabwe. With close to 150 000 farmers, the tobacco industry has
been largely blamed for massive destruction of the indigenous forests.

RBZ reopens $1,55bn Treasury Bond

THE Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) says it has reopened the $1,55 billion
two- year Treasury Bond (TB) after receiving requests from some interested
investors while the instrument will now be closed after every two weeks. The
Treasury bond which initially closed on August 18, 2021, is meant to raise
funds to finance key Government programmes, which have been a common feature
across the country since the new administration came into office in 2017.

Forex product to spur remittances

In the mid-term budget review, the Ministry of Finance indicated that
remittance flows to Zimbabwe had reached US$700 million in the first-half of
the year with analysts expecting them to surpass the US$1 billion mark by
year end. Most funds are sent for basic upkeep of relatives and loved ones
but there is a growing desire by Zimbabweans living in the diaspora to do
more than just send money for school fees and basic groceries.

Turkish investors arrive for NRZ deal

The recapitalisation of the National Railways of Zimbabwe is pacing up, with
representatives of the Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi that is
keen to invest in the railway firm, arriving in Zimbabwe yesterday to assess
NRZ's infrastructure. The tour by the Turkish officials is a follow-up to
the visit by NRZ board members and senior management to Turkey in June this
year, where the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to
collaborate in the modernisation and rehabilitation of the country's railway

The new Harare commuter train services run by Zupco and the National

Old offer letters for resettlement land and land permits are being replaced
with new documents that have improved security features to curb illegal
parcelling out of land and weed out fake offer letters. Most people who
obtained an offer letter legally and have been using their land will have
little trouble getting the new document, basically just signing a form.

AfreximBank asset base up 5,5 percent to US$20bn

THE African Export-Import Bank (AfreximBank) has grown its asset base by 5,5
percent to US$20,37 billion with a solid performance for the six months
period to 30 June 2021. During the period under review the financial
institution recorded a net income of US$168,9 million compared to US$150,75
million last year. The increase was largely due to growth in interest income
and a 13 percent decrease in interest expense arising from a cost-effective

Plan to turn tobacco sector into US$5bn industry approved

Cabinet received an update on the country's response to the Covid-19
Outbreak, which was presented by the Minister of Defence and War Veterans
Affairs, as Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Task Force on the Covid-19
Response. Cabinet hereby informs the nation that as at 6 September, 2021,
Zimbabwe's cumulative Covid-19 cases had increased to 125 550, with 117 036
recoveries and 4 493 deaths. The recovery rate was 93 percent, with 99
percent of Covid-19 cases being attributed to local transmission.

FAST-FOOD service provider, Simbisa Brands, has opened a new branch in
Redcliff as part of a business expansion drive. Located at the recently

Zimplats declares US$85m FY dividend

ZIMBABWE'S biggest platinum miner, Zimplats, has declared US$85 million
dividend for the financial year ended June 30,2021. During the financial
year under review, the group realised revenue amounting to US$1,35 billion
compared to US$869 million in 2020 for metal sales to Impala, its parent
firm. Sales to Impala are governed by a contract, which stipulates when
payments are to be received and the prices to be effected.

'Hwange National Park needs aggressive marketing'

HWANGE National Park is Zimbabwe's largest game reserve and ranked the 10th
in Africa but is not as visible as it should be because of poor marketing.
There is inadequate signage even along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway.
Motorists barely notice they are entering the sanctuary, were it not for
signs warning of danger posed by animals yet scores of tourists, both local
and international who visit Victoria Falls do not leave without a day or two
in the Hwange National Park where they enjoy viewing a variety of mammals
