Coronavirus Global Updates 15 June ::: Two Shots Against Delta; England Stays Locked Down; Malaysia Allows Pfizer for Age 12 and Over

Zimbabwe COVID19 Update

COVID-19 update: As at 14 June 2021, Zimbabwe had 40 077 confirmed cases, including 37 027 recoveries and 1 635 deaths. To date, a total of693 568 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Two Shots Against Delta; England Stays Locked Down: Virus Update

There was good news on the vaccine front, with two-dose shots from Pfizer Inc. and AstraZeneca Plc proving <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-14/delta-variant-doubles-risk-of-covid-hospitalization-in-study> highly effective at preventing the hospitalization of those with Covid-19’s delta variant, though Astra’s separate Storm Chaser antibody cocktail missed its goals in another study. Novavax Inc.’s candidate showed strong efficacy, including against variants, in a large trial. Pfizer is reviewing cases where fully inoculated people caught Covid-19 to decide if and when <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QUPQNZT0G1KX> boosters are needed.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-14/u-k-s-johnson-delays-end-of-england-s-lockdown-as-cases-surge> delayed plans to lift England’s pandemic curbs until July 19 due to a surge in the delta variant. Modeling showed hospital admissions could reach similar levels to the first wave of infections in spring 2020 if social-distancing rules were ended as planned on June 21.

Singapore plans to reopen schools in stages from the end of June as vaccinations among children increase. But Indonesia tightened curbs on movement. The Philippines is keeping Manila under the second-loosest restrictions, while tightening rules in more than a dozen areas.

AstraZeneca Antibody Cocktail Falls Short
AstraZeneca’s antibody cocktail was found to be only 33% effective at preventing Covid-19 symptoms in people who had been exposed to the virus, failing the study’s main goal and dealing a setback to the drugmaker.

The study, named Storm Chaser, looked at whether the long-acting antibody combination could protect people who had recently been in contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in places like care homes.

The outcome is a blow to Astra for a drug that was hoped to be a bright spot in its pandemic efforts following the mixed success of its vaccine with the University of Oxford.

Medigen Plans Vietnam, Paraguay Trials
Taiwan’s Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp. plans to launch clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine after it signed a memorandum of understanding with Vietnam’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and the medical sciences school of Paraguay’s National University of Asuncion, the company said in a statement. Medigen also plans to talk with Southeast Asian countries about research and development as well as business cooperation.

Malaysia Allows Pfizer for Age 12 and Over
Malaysia’s Drug Control Authority approved the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those aged 12 and older. It also granted conditional authority for the single-dose vaccines made by CanSino Biologics Inc. of China, and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen shot.

Turkey Offers Shots to Public, Private Workers
Turkey’s health minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter that everyone registered as an employee at Turkish companies and all public servants can now book an appointment to get vaccinated.

Turkey vaccinated around 842,494 people on Monday, bringing the total amount of doses administered to 34.6 million, according to official data. Out of those, 20.8 million people received at least one shot of the vaccine.

Singapore Plans to Open Schools in Stages
Singapore, one of the first countries to authorize the use of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine for children aged 12 and above, plans to resume <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-14/singapore-virus-cases-at-close-to-2-week-high-amid-more-tests> face-to-face instruction in schools on a staggered bases from June 28.

Almost 90% of students have signed up for vaccinations, and one in three have had their first dose, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing said in a Facebook post on Monday. “Going forward, we must combine vaccination with increased testing and rapid isolation of potential infection clusters to keep our schools open and safe.”

Rampant Variant Derails U.K.’s Plan to Lift Curbs
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson pushed back his plan to lift England’s coronavirus restrictions by four weeks as the more infectious delta variant spreads rapidly across the U.K.

“The objective of this short delay is to use these valuable, crucial weeks to save <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-14/u-k-s-johnson-delays-end-of-england-s-lockdown-as-cases-surge> thousands of lives -- lives that would otherwise be lost, I’m afraid -- by vaccinating millions more people as fast as we can,” he said in a televised briefing on Monday. The full easing of rules was delayed from June 21 to July 19.

The government is expected to put the delay to a debate and vote on Wednesday in Parliament, where Johnson is likely to face anger from Conservative colleagues for backtracking on what they dubbed “Freedom Day.”

Pfizer to Study if Boosters Are Necessary
Pfizer Inc. <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QUPQNZT0G1KX> will examine cases of fully vaccinated people who contracted Covid-19 to determine whether and when a booster shot is necessary.

“We will be looking at real world data to help us understand when we might see a change in vaccine effectiveness,” David Swerdlow, clinical epidemiology lead for Pfizer Vaccines, said at the Precision Medicine World Conference.

More than 10,200 Covid-19 vaccine breakthrough cases have been reported in the U.S. as of April 30, although it’s rare for fully vaccinated people to get infected.

WHO Chief Cites Urgent Need for More Shots
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the Group of Seven’s pledge of 870 million Covid-19 vaccine doses, but said more shots are needed quickly.

The steep rise in cases in Africa is “especially concerning” as it has the least access to vaccines, diagnostics and oxygen. That increases the continent’s mortality rate among critically ill patients, despite it having fewer reported cases than elsewhere.

“The risks have increased for people not protected,” he said. “Right now the virus is moving faster than the global distribution of vaccines.”

NYC Plans Parade for Front-Line Workers
New York City will also launch a $100 referral bonus program for community groups to boost the rate of vaccinations, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. For every unvaccinated person an organization brings in to get a Covid-19 shot, the community group gets $100 per person, up to $20,000. The program starts Wednesday.

Vaccines Show Protection Against Variant
Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer Inc. and AstraZeneca Plc are highly effective after two doses at preventing hospitalization of those infected with the delta variant, underscoring the urgency in getting people fully vaccinated.

The Pfizer and BioNTech SE shot is 96% effective against hospitalization after two doses, while the AstraZeneca and University of Oxford Covid inoculation is 92% effective, according to an analysis announced Monday by Public Health England. Those results are comparable with the protection offered against the alpha variant, which first emerged in Britain, the data show.

Germany’s Soeder Rejects ‘Vaccine Tourism’
Bavaria Premier Markus Soeder has called for rules to be introduced to prevent people traveling to other countries for a Covid-19 shot.

“We don’t want vaccine tourism; that is wrong,” Soeder said Monday at a news conference. He was addressing a report that a group of more than 100 workers from an Italian luxury resort traveled to Munich in May and were inoculated in a hotel at the Bavarian capital’s airport then immediately returned to Italy.

Novavax Posts 90% Vaccine Efficacy
Novavax Inc. said its Covid-19 vaccine was 90% effective at preventing symptomatic Covid and 100% effective at preventing moderate and severe symptoms. The shot was 93% effective against variants of concern, it said. The company expects to be able to manufacture 100 million doses a month by the end of the third quarter and 150 million daily by the end of the fourth quarter.
